What Happened?
On Saturday, August 31, 2024, members of the climate activist group Futuro Vegetal sprayed red paint onto the Sagrada Familia basilica in Barcelona, Spain. The act is part of a broader campaign of protests targeting symbols of tourism and wealth in Spain. According to the Associated Press, the paint caused visible damage to the basilica’s facade.
Virginia barcones, director of civil protection services, stated on saturday that the emergency situation stemming from the protests was “coming to an end,” according to the AP. The group also reportedly targeted a super yacht in Ibiza, believed to belong to Walmart heiress Nancy Walton Laurie, and a mansion owned by former FC Barcelona star Lionel Messi, also in Ibiza.
Who is futuro Vegetal?
futuro Vegetal (Vegetable Future) is a Spanish climate activist group known for disruptive protests. They have staged dozens of similar actions, including a 2022 demonstration at the prado museum in madrid where activists glued themselves to the frames of paintings by Francisco de Goya. The group has stated links to similar activist organizations internationally.
In 2023, Spanish police arrested 22 members of Futuro vegetal, including those involved in the Prado protest and the group’s three main leaders, the Associated Press reports. The group advocates for systemic change to address climate change and often targets symbols of perceived excess and environmental damage.
The Broader Context of Climate Activism
The Sagrada Familia incident is part of a growing trend of climate activism involving direct action and the targeting of cultural landmarks. Groups like Futuro Vegetal, Just Stop Oil in the UK, and Letzte Generation in Germany are employing increasingly disruptive tactics to raise awareness and pressure governments to take more aggressive action on climate change.
These tactics range from blocking roads and disrupting public events to damaging or defacing property. While some view these actions as vandalism and unacceptable, others argue they are necessary to draw attention to the urgency of the climate crisis.
