Sales of electric cars increased by 31 percent globally

In 2023

Global sales of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) will grow 31 percent in 2023, down from 60 percent growth in 2022, according to research by Rho Motion, according to Reuters.

– The pace of growth is slowing down, but that is to be expected in growing markets like this. You can’t double the numbers every year – Rho Motion data manager Charles Lester told Reuters.

Lester added that global electric vehicle sales last year were broadly in line with the 30 percent growth forecast by Rho Motion.

For 2024, the company predicts global sales growth of electric vehicles between 25 and 30 percent.

December sales hit a monthly record of 1.5 million units, Rho Motion said.

Fully electric or battery electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 9.5 million of the 13.6 million EVs sold worldwide in 2023, with PHEVs accounting for the remainder.

After years of rapid growth, some automakers fear that sales of electric cars in Europe and elsewhere could be headed for a slowdown in demand as drivers wait for better, smaller and cheaper models that could appear in two to three years.
