Actor Sam Asghari, known for his role on Hacks, acknowledges that his past relationship with pop star Britney Spears both helped and hindered his acting career. while the high-profile romance increased his visibility, Asghari says it also created challenges in being taken seriously as an actor.
Asghari met Spears in 2016 when he appeared in her “Slumber Party” music video. The couple’s relationship, which lasted six years and included a 2022 wedding, ended in divorce a little over a year later. During that time, Asghari navigated the complexities of building his career while being publicly linked to Spears.
Speaking on the Page Six podcast, Asghari addressed how his relationship with Spears impacted his career aspirations. He admitted that the relationship provided a platform, increasing his exposure. However, he emphasized that he was already pursuing acting when they met.
I can’t sit here and lie and say, ‘It wasn’t good for me.’ When you’re in such a public relationship, that gives you that platform — it sort of gave me that platform for who I am.
Asghari, who has since moved on romantically, also noted the downsides. He said he had to work harder to prove himself, facing perceptions of being a “cheesy trainer” associated with a pop star. This created a hurdle in convincing producers to see him as a serious character actor.
Did it make me, you know, have to work harder to prove myself? Absolutely. [Producers would say] ‘Do we really want to hire someone that’s a cheesy trainer? Oh,and he’s associated with a pop star,which is also cheesy as well. Or can we see him as a character?’ There was that line as well.
Asghari continues to pursue acting roles, navigating the challenges and opportunities that come with his unique background. He acknowledges both the benefits and drawbacks of his past relationship, remaining committed to his career.
