Samara Cyn, a rising star in hip-hop, is making waves with her blend of rap and neo-soul.The Arizona State University alumna didn’t always envision a career in music. In fact, she once prized herself on academic perfection.
A 2021 internship at Intel soured her on corporate life. Cyn told Billboard that the experience was “miserable.”
Now, four years later, Cyn is poised to make a significant impact. After signing with VANTA in early 2024,she released her debut project,The Drive Home,in October. the album showcased her lyrical skill and storytelling ability.
Her work has caught the attention of established artists. Nas, Erykah Badu, and Lauryn Hill have all given Cyn their support.
The California wildfires in January prompted Cyn to create her latest EP, Backroads, which arrived June 20. The experience of being without power forced her to confront the discomfort of silence.
“I realized how uncomfortable it made me to sit in silence,” Cyn said, adding that it made her reflect on how easy it is to “ignore and distract and disassociate rather than face things.”
Cyn, currently touring north America with Smino, further explores the themes of Backroads, her experience with lauryn Hill, and her future aspirations.
It’s not lucrative at frist. It’s like trying to get into the NBA.It’s not dumb for the people who make it. A very [small] number of people get to have long careers. You gotta work really f–king hard and you don’t get paid for a long time.
We’re desensitized as f–k. It pushed me into the whole delusion thing. How much are we willing to sacrifice to be comfortable and be delusional? Backroad is the long way around instead of facing that s–t.
What’s next
Cyn plans to continue touring and creating new music, further solidifying her place in the hip-hop and neo-soul scene.
