Samsung has announced that it will discontinue its proprietary Samsung Messages texting application in July 2026. The company is directing impacted users of Samsung smartphones and other devices to transition to Google Messages to ensure a consistent messaging experience across the Android ecosystem.

The announcement was detailed in an end-of-service notice published on Samsung’s U.S. Support website. This move aligns Samsung’s device software more closely with the standard Android operating system developed by Google, which powers all Galaxy phones.

Transition Process and User Impact

To facilitate the switch, Samsung’s website provides instructions for users to download Google Messages from the Play Store if the app is not already installed on their device. Once downloaded, users must set the application as their default messaging service.

Samsung indicated that some users may receive in-app notifications to guide them through the transition process. For those with the newest hardware, such as the Galaxy 26 lineup and other recent models, the Samsung Messages app is already unavailable for download from the Galaxy Store as of April 6, 2026.

Not all Samsung users are affected by this change. The company noted that users running older Android operating systems, specifically those on Android 11 or earlier, will not be impacted by the discontinuation of Samsung Messages.

Users who wish to verify their current operating system can do so by opening the settings app, selecting software information, and scrolling to the Android version section.

AI Integration and Feature Enhancements

Samsung stated that migrating to Google Messages will provide users with access to the latest artificial intelligence capabilities powered by Google’s Gemini. These AI enhancements include AI-powered reply suggestions to streamline conversations.

AI Integration and Feature Enhancements

Among these updates is an experimental feature called Remix, which allows users to generate images directly within their conversations.

Beyond AI, the transition enables improved cross-platform communication. Users will be able to share higher-quality photos between Android and Apple iOS devices through the use of RCS-enabled messages. RCS, or Rich Communication Services, is the modern communication protocol designed to replace traditional SMS.

Strategic Context

The shift toward a single, unified messaging standard on Android devices reduces fragmentation between different manufacturers’ skins of the operating system. By adopting Google Messages as the primary interface, Samsung ensures that its users have access to the same feature set and update cycle as other Android device owners.

This transition reflects a broader trend of integrating Google’s AI and communication services deeper into the hardware experience of Galaxy devices, moving away from duplicating core system apps that Google already provides for the Android platform.
