[헤럴드경제=김지헌 기자] While Samsung Electronics predicted that it would expand the market in earnest by supplying advanced vehicle memory solutions such as high-performance solid-state drives (SSDs) and graphic DRAMs to global automakers, there is an observation that the manufacturer would be Tesla.

It is analyzed that as the level of autonomous driving required increases, the demand for high-performance and high-capacity semiconductors will increase, and cases of cooperation between global companies will inevitably appear.

According to the industry on the 19th, the automotive memory solution supplied by Samsung Electronics this time is optimized for high-performance infotainment systems ▷PCIe Gen3 NVMe 256GB (Gigabyte) SSD ▷2GB DDR4 DRAM ▷2GB GDDR6 graphics There are three types of DRAM, ▷2GB GDDR6 graphic DRAM, and ▷128GB universal flash storage (UFS) for autonomous driving systems.

Samsung Electronics’ supply of these products is believed to be due to the continuous increase in demand for high-capacity and high-performance memory semiconductors. Demand for high-capacity SSDs and high-performance graphic DRAMs is increasing as autonomous driving systems are expanding recently and in-vehicle infotainment systems such as high-resolution maps, video streaming, and high-end games are advanced. The semiconductor replacement cycle in the automobile market has been shortened from 7 to 8 years to 3 to 4 years, and the market is gradually changing to a market that requires server-level performance and capacity.

After introducing the industry’s first UFS for vehicles in 2017, it is reported that Samsung Electronics is planning to expand the market by releasing high-performance SSDs and graphic DRAMs that are mounted on the server level.

The 256GB (gigabyte) SSD supplied this time boasts the industry’s highest performance with a continuous read speed of 2100MB/s (megabyte per second) and a continuous write speed of 300MB/s. It is 7 times and 2 times faster than eMMC installed in existing vehicles, respectively.

The 2GB GDDR6 supports a data processing speed of up to 14 Gbps (gigabit per second) per pin, allowing drivers to enjoy various high-spec multimedia contents and quickly process large amounts of autonomous driving data. In addition, these products have secured high stability to operate in extreme environments from minus 40℃ to 105℃.

Global consulting firm McKinsey predicted that sales of semiconductors for autonomous vehicles will reach $29 billion annually by 2030 through a report. According to the report, sales of semiconductors for autonomous vehicles in 2030 are expected to nearly triple that of 2019 ($11 billion per year). McKinsey predicted that the semiconductor market will grow significantly as the second stage technology is commercialized in the autonomous vehicle industry. It is predicted that semiconductor demand in autonomous vehicles with level 2 or higher will increase significantly from 40% in 2019 to 85% in 2030. In addition, it is predicted that the semiconductor demand in the second-stage vehicle will drive the market growth until 2025, but the semiconductor demand in the fourth-phase vehicle will also increase after that.

An industry official said, “The automobile industry is once again becoming an important source of revenue for semiconductor companies.”
