[서울와이어 박성필 기자] Samsung is drawing attention by unveiling a so-called ‘band smartphone’ that can be worn on the wrist like a watch.
According to foreign media reports such as CNET, Samsung unveiled a prototype of ‘Smart Band Phone’ for the first time at ‘MWC 2024’, the world’s largest mobile communication fair held in Spain.
A band smartphone is a device with a flexible and foldable display screen. It can be folded into a semi-circle and worn on the wrist. When not folded into a bar shape, it can be used as a normal smartphone.
A USB-C terminal and a speaker are also included in the bottom. There are many grooves on the back of the smartphone to support the display and prevent it from breaking when the smartphone is folded.
In addition, a camera and heart rate monitor are located on the back, so when worn on the wrist, heart rate and other health information can be tracked at the same time.
However, the release date of the Samsung Band smartphone is unknown. It has unproven durability and, unlike smartwatches or bands, is large and can be uncomfortable to wear.
Experts believe that since Samsung Electronics introduced the world’s first foldable phone in 2019, it has been working on innovating the appearance of smartphones, so commercialization will not be too far away.
