Hawai‘i erased a two-touchdown halftime deficit but fell short in the closing seconds, dropping a 20-16 decision to San Jose State at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex as Micah Alejado’s final Hail Mary pass was batted away in the end zone. The defeat dropped the Rainbow Warriors to 1-4 overall and 0-3 in the Mountain West, while San Jose State improved to 3-2 and claimed its conference opener under former Hawai‘i quarterback Luke Weaver.
How San Jose State Built Its Halftime Lead
Hawai‘i struggled through its third scoreless first half of the season, falling behind 14-0 as early mistakes proved costly. An early interception occurred when Alejado overthrew Nick Delgadillo, allowing Jayden Robertson to return the ball 21 yards to the Hawai‘i 20-yard line. Three plays later, Weaver connected with Kamaehu Kopa-Kaawalauole on a 10-yard touchdown pass to put the Spartans on the board. Weaver later engineered a 73-yard drive, capping it with a 12-yard scoring pass to Carson Clark with 6:08 left in the second quarter. Hawai‘i’s offense stalled during the period as two gains were wiped out by holding penalties, pushing the team out of field-goal range and cementing the 14-0 halftime deficit.
Hawai‘i Ignites a Second-Half Surge
The Rainbow Warriors roared back after intermission by scoring on four consecutive possessions. Sean Olvera-Harle converted field goals of 44 and 24 yards on Hawai‘i’s first two drives of the third quarter to slice the deficit to 14-6. Devin Alves then sparked the offense by hauling in a pass from Alejado and racing down the sideline for a 58-yard touchdown. Olvera-Harle added the extra point to pull Hawai‘i within 14-13 with 3:20 remaining in the third period. After a 24-yard field goal by San Jose State’s Trajan Sinatra, Olvera-Harle connected from 44 yards out again with 11:52 left in the contest, trimming the margin to 17-16.
Late Penalties and Final Seconds Seal the Defeat
Hawai‘i committed 12 penalties on the night, and San Jose State converted two interceptions into 10 points to withstand the second-half rally. Trajan Sinatra extended the Spartans’ lead to 20-16 with a 30-yard field goal with 1:15 remaining, leaving the Rainbow Warriors to mount a final touchdown drive with no timeouts. Alejado advanced the offense into San Jose State territory by utilizing deliberate clock-stopping spikes before launching his final throw into the end zone as time expired. Alejado finished with 341 passing yards, and Alves recorded three catches for 121 yards, but the early hole and crucial miscues kept the team from completing the comeback.
Upcoming Nonconference Matchup Against Arizona State
The Rainbow Warriors look to rebound when they travel to face Arizona State on Oct. 10 in a nonconference fixture. San Jose State’s victory marks the sixth consecutive head-to-head win for the Spartans over Hawai‘i in their ongoing series.
