Rousseau Calls for Left Primary Before ’27 French Election
French politician Sandrine rousseau is advocating for a left-wing primary to consolidate the camp ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Speaking on LCP, Rousseau, a member of the environmental party, stated that a unified left is the “only solution” to ensure their presence in the election’s first round.
With the presidential election two years away, ambitions are rising across the political spectrum. While the central bloc sees figures like Édouard Philippe and Gabriel Attal vying for prominence, the National Rally (RN) faces uncertainty between Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella. simultaneously occurring, voices on the left are seeking to unite, aiming for a repeat of the 2012 election when François Hollande faced Nicolas Sarkozy.
Following François Ruffin’s proposal for a broad primary, rousseau expressed interest. Having participated in the EELV primary in 2021, she now calls for the most open primary possible, featuring several candidates. “I do not want it to be a balance of power or a conclave, but that it is indeed a democratic debate which also interests on the subjects of the left,” rousseau said.
Despite some programmatic disagreements within the left, Rousseau insists that a primary is essential. She referenced the coalition formed during the 2024 legislative elections, highlighting the need for unity despite differences. Though, Manuel Bompard of France Insoumise has already rejected the idea of participating in a left-wing primary, a stance shared by Raphaël Gluckmann of Place Publique.
”There is no other solution. It is indeed a primary whose auspicious and the result must be accepted,” Rousseau stated, emphasizing the importance of accepting the outcome.
