MUMBAI: Malayali cricketer Sanju Samson will play as India’s top wicket-taker in the Twenty20 World Cup. National media reported that BCCI is considering Sanju over Rishabh Pant as a wicket keeper. BCCI will announce the squad for the World Cup very soon. ICC has suggested that the World Cup teams should be announced before May 1.
Sanju’s World Cup chances have been boosted by his impressive performance as the captain of Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. It is possible that Rishabh Pant will join the team as the second wicket keeper. Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul and Dinesh Karthik are also competing for the wicketkeeper’s position, but Sanju has every chance. KL is just a top class batsman. Rahul has shone in the Indian team. BCCI’s view is that there is no need for another senior player in the top order with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Sanju Samson made his Twenty20 debut for India against Zimbabwe in July 2015. So far, the player has scored 374 runs from 25 internationals. Despite shining in the IPL for many years, Team India has not played Sanju in any ICC series. The player has scored 385 runs from nine matches in IPL 2024.
