- Political Landscape in Spain: A Q&A with Julián Quirós
A look at current political issues, corruption allegations, and the future of Spanish politics.
Julián Quirós expresses pride in receiving an award named after José Javier Uranga, former director of ‘Diario de Navarra,’ whom he considers a “reference in all orders.”
Uranga and others represent the type of journalism in which I still believe and in which we work to make it possible in the future. There is no other way of doing good journalism and honest journalism,
Quirós stated, emphasizing UrangaS dedication and sacrifice, especially during times of risk in Navarra and the Basque Country.
He notes the current political climate where the Spanish and Navarran governments rely on pacts with Bildu, a party that has yet to condemn terrorism, despite Uranga surviving an ETA shooting.
It generates an enormous impotence as we have told all this, everyone knows and yet there it is indeed and nobody blushes. It is very frustrating that those who submitted for half a century with terror, which are not democratically validated to occupy certain sites, have been legitimized and have put room for a political and personal ambition,
Quirós said.
When asked if this favors social amnesia, Quirós responded affirmatively.
People know it, but as perhaps we have become accustomed to seeing everything through screens, knowing it like that it seems to us that things are not strictly real. People know these things, but perhaps they do not have sufficient moral sensitivity to say that this is unacceptable. Some people, a lot, logically they are very clear. Perhaps the public conversation within a few years is different and this is again what it should be, right? Something deeply unworthy.Because also the children of those who suffered it are alive.
Current Political Spain
quirós describes the current political situation as one of huge confusion
with no horizon.
He argues that the Socialist Party (PSOE) has embraced populism, similar to what Podemos once represented, to maintain power.
The PSOE has gone to populism that once represented Podemos as a formula of sustaining itself in power.
He also notes the fragmentation of the center and right political forces, making it difficult to form a cohesive choice.
Corruption Allegations
Regarding recent scandals involving figures like Ábalos, Koldo, and Begoña Gómez, the wife of President Sánchez, Quirós believes these cases will end badly, regardless of judicial outcomes.
They have tried to convince us that what does not end in a criminal sentence is perfectly assumed, it is well done and is correct. It is not true. Many of these matters of corruption, bad praxis, inappropriate behaviors, abuses, will have a criminal judicial result and others do not know. But there are things, like Begoña Gómez, which one cannot do.This was always very clear about journalism. In politics it is not enough to not breach the law. Everything will end badly because it is wrong, which does not imply that it accelerates the end of the legislature. it does not mean that the Sanchismo cycle will end this, but of course it is being very eroded.
He suggests that Santos Cerdán, a key figure in the PSOE, is likely worried about his connections to Koldo, given the accumulating evidence.
Valencian Community and Political Obligation
reflecting on his time at ‘The Provinces,’ Quirós recalls the emergence of corruption cases within the Popular Party (PP) in the Valencian Community. He acknowledges that while Paco Camps, a prominent figure, was acquitted in multiple judicial processes, there were still significant corruption cases during his tenure.
He also addresses the criticism faced by Valencian President Carlos Mazón (PP) for his handling of the DANA disaster.
President Mazón has not been up to the height or after the catastrophe of the Valencian Dana.
Quirós argues that Mazón’s response has been inadequate, citing negligence and a lack of leadership.
Future Leadership
When asked about the potential future leaders of Spain, Quirós focuses on Alberto Núñez Feijóo and isabel Díaz Ayuso.
If Feijóo fails to be president of the Government, his entire party is clear that he will have to go to another stage.
He believes Feijóo is the immediate contender to challenge Pedro Sánchez, but acknowledges that if Feijóo fails, the party will need to consider other options.
Damage to the Left
Quirós discusses the potential damage to the left-wing parties due to cases involving figures like Errejón and Monedero, emphasizing the hypocrisy of moralizing public figures who fail to uphold their own standards.
If you have a moralizing public speech, indoctrinator, sobering, that you tell others how they have to behave and from behind you not only do not fulfill it but you are doing what you blame for others, it is unbearable for them and their organization. Devastating.
The Monarchy
Quirós addresses the role of the monarchy, noting the discrediting effect of Juan Carlos I’s later years and the recovery efforts of Don Felipe and Mrs. Letizia.
The monarchy will last to the extent that it is indeed useful to society.
He believes the monarchy’s future depends on its usefulness to society, its dedication, clarity, and exemplary service to the Spanish people.
