The company acknowledged strong retail sales for its Magee 1866 stores in Donegal Town, Dublin, and online.
However, the brand experienced a slowdown in wholesale and weaving sales after a spike in demand in 2022. Rising business costs impacted profits. Magee CEO Rosy Temple confirmed ongoing national and international interest in their lifestyle collections, which include unique fabrics made in Donegal.

However, while this boosted retail sales, it’s essential to understand that our overall revenue has seen a slight decrease.

Rosy Temple: Absolutely. The revenue decline can be attributed to various factors, including a slowdown in wholesale and weaving sales after an initial spike in 2022. Many brands are facing rising operational costs, and unfortunately, we are no exception. Our costs of sales and overheads have both increased, which puts pressure on our profit margins.

Rosy Temple: Certainly. Our cost of sales rose from €6.85 million to €6.96 million, and overheads increased from €5.6 million to €6.2 million. Additionally, employment grew from 91 to 100 employees, which naturally led to an increase in staff costs from €3.3 million to €3.63 million. Furthermore, last year we saw a rise in depreciation costs, which went up from €147,562 to €243,148. All these factors combined have affected our profit levels.

Rosy Temple: The support we received during the pandemic was crucial in navigating those challenging times. However, without that assistance in 2023, we had to adjust our strategies. We are currently focusing on driving retail sales through our Magee 1866 stores and online channels, which have shown strong performance. The challenges are ongoing, but we remain positive about the interest in our lifestyle collections.

Rosy Temple: While we have seen an increase in shareholder funds, the decline in cash funds is something we are closely monitoring. We aim to stabilize our finances by focusing on retail growth while managing costs effectively. Our goal is to enhance profitability while continuing to provide high-quality products that our customers cherish.
