Sarah Jessica Parker Boosts Magee Clothing Sales with Pink Tweed Coat Endorsement

Sarah Jessica Parker Boosts Magee Clothing Sales with Pink Tweed Coat Endorsement

November 16, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Business

In 2023, the Magee clothing brand, based in County Donegal and family-owned, saw a surge in retail demand. This was largely due to Hollywood star Sarah Jessica Parker, who posted a picture of her new pink tweed coat from Magee to her 9.5 million social media followers in July.

Following Parker’s endorsement, the €575 coat quickly sold out. Despite this boost in sales, Magee’s financial reports indicated a slight revenue decrease, from €14.2 million to €13.95 million. The company acknowledged strong retail sales for its Magee 1866 stores in Donegal Town, Dublin, and online.

However, the brand experienced a slowdown in wholesale and weaving sales after a spike in demand in 2022. Rising business costs impacted profits. Magee CEO Rosy Temple confirmed ongoing national and international interest in their lifestyle collections, which include unique fabrics made in Donegal.

The accounts revealed that costs rose, affecting profits. The cost of sales increased from €6.85 million to €6.96 million, and overheads rose from €5.6 million to €6.2 million. Employment grew from 91 to 100 employees, with staff costs increasing from €3.3 million to €3.63 million.

How has the trend of high-profile endorsements impacted Magee Clothing’s brand visibility and sales performance?

Interview with Rosy Temple, CEO of Magee Clothing

Date: October 2023

Interviewer: Thank you for joining us, Rosy. Magee ⁤has seen quite a notable surge in retail demand this year, particularly after Sarah Jessica Parker showcased your pink tweed coat. How has her endorsement influenced your brand?

Rosy Temple: Thank⁤ you for having me. Sarah Jessica Parker’s ‍endorsement ‌has indeed had⁢ a significant impact on our brand visibility. When‌ she shared a photo of the pink tweed coat with her followers, it sparked a whirlwind of interest and demand. It ‍was thrilling to see our⁤ product resonate with⁣ her audience, leading to⁣ a quick sell-out of that item. However, while this boosted retail ‌sales, it’s essential to understand that our overall revenue has seen‌ a slight decrease.

Interviewer: It’s interesting to ‌note that despite the surge‍ in retail ‍sales, your financial reports show a revenue decrease from €14.2 million to €13.95‌ million. Can‌ you explain the factors contributing to this?

Rosy Temple: ‍ Absolutely. The revenue decline can be attributed to various factors, ‌including a ⁣slowdown in ⁤wholesale and weaving sales after‌ an initial spike in 2022. Many⁤ brands are facing rising operational costs, and unfortunately, we are no exception. Our costs of sales and overheads have both increased, which⁤ puts pressure ‌on our profit margins.

Interviewer: You mentioned rising costs. ‍Can you detail how the increase in costs has affected your profitability?

Rosy Temple: Certainly. Our cost of sales rose from €6.85 million to⁤ €6.96 million, and overheads increased from €5.6 million to €6.2 million. Additionally, employment⁤ grew from 91 ⁤to⁣ 100 employees, which naturally led to an increase ⁢in ‍staff costs from €3.3 million to €3.63 million. Furthermore,⁢ last year we ‌saw a rise ⁢in depreciation⁣ costs, which went ‌up from €147,562 to €243,148. All these factors combined ⁣have affected our profit levels.

Interviewer: In 2022, Magee benefited from Covid-19 support, which was not available⁣ this year. How has that influenced your ‍operations in 2023?

Rosy Temple: The⁢ support we received ⁣during the pandemic was crucial ‍in⁣ navigating those challenging times. However, without ‌that assistance⁢ in 2023, we had to adjust our strategies. We are currently ‌focusing on driving retail sales through our Magee 1866 stores and online channels, which have shown strong performance. The challenges ⁤are ongoing, but we remain positive about the interest in our lifestyle collections.

Interviewer: ‍Speaking of your⁣ collections, can you elaborate on the ongoing interest in Magee’s offerings?

Rosy Temple: We are experiencing strong national and international interest in ⁣our unique lifestyle collections, particularly those featuring fabrics made in Donegal. The quality and local craftsmanship ⁣resonate with ‌customers seeking authenticity. We are committed to⁢ evolving and responding to our clientele’s preferences while⁢ maintaining our roots.

Interviewer: As of December, your shareholder funds have increased to €7.39 million, but cash funds have declined. What is your outlook for the company moving forward?

Rosy Temple: While ⁤we have seen an increase in⁣ shareholder funds, the decline in cash funds is something‍ we ⁢are closely monitoring. We aim to stabilize our‍ finances by focusing on retail‌ growth while managing costs effectively. Our goal is to enhance‍ profitability ⁢while continuing to provide high-quality products that our customers cherish.

Interviewer: Thank⁢ you, Rosy, for providing such valuable insights into Magee’s current ‍state and your future plans.

Rosy Temple: Thank you for the opportunity to share our story. We appreciate the support from our customers as we navigate this phase.

In 2022, Magee benefited from Covid-19 support of €79,046, which was not available in 2023. The company faced higher depreciation costs, rising from €147,562 in 2022 to €243,148 last year.

As of December, shareholder funds increased to €7.39 million, including €5.95 million in accumulated profits. However, cash funds declined from €2.4 million to €1.69 million.
