Housemarque has announced that its upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive title, Saros, has officially gone gold. This status indicates that the development process is complete and the game is finalized for its scheduled release on April 30, 2026.

The announcement confirms that the title is now locked and loaded for launch, following a period of development that positions the game as a successor to the studio’s 2021 release, Returnal. While Saros is not a direct sequel, it is described as a spiritual successor that integrates the core ideas and Housemarque DNA established in Returnal.

According to reporting from GameRant on April 1, 2026, the title features evolved gameplay and new mechanics designed to maintain the loop structure of the developer’s previous work while offering a far less punishing experience for the player.

Gameplay Systems and Genre Integration

Saros is a sci-fi action game that blends several distinct genres into its core loop. The experience combines elements of third-person shooting, bullet hell, and roguelike content. This combination requires players to manage high-intensity combat environments characterized by dense projectile patterns typical of the bullet hell genre, while utilizing the perspective and movement of a third-person shooter.

The game introduces a specific focus on persistent resource and progression mechanics. In many roguelike titles, death results in a total loss of progress. however, Saros allows players to permanently upgrade their loadout. After each death, players can utilize acquired resources to implement permanent suit enhancements and unlock new weapons for subsequent playthroughs.

Narrative and Setting

Players control the protagonist, Arjun Devraj, a character portrayed by Rahul Kohli. Devraj is a Soltari Enforcer tasked with investigating a lost off-world colony located on the planet Carcosa.

The exploration of Carcosa involves uncovering the history of the colony and the events that led to its current state. This narrative delivery is handled through the discovery of Soltari Holograms. These collectibles are found while exploring the planet and serve as the primary means of unlocking details regarding the backstory of the environment and the colony’s inhabitants.

Combat Mechanics and the Solari Shield

A central technical feature of the combat in Saros is the Solari Shield wielded by Arjun Devraj. This tool serves as a critical defensive and offensive mechanism. Rather than simply blocking damage, the shield allows the player to absorb the energy from incoming enemy projectiles.

Once this energy is absorbed, the player can convert it to transform Devraj’s right arm into Carcosan Power Weapons. This mechanic allows the player to redirect the energy of their enemies back at them, turning defensive maneuvers into offensive strikes.

Saros is developed exclusively for the PlayStation 5. In addition to the standard release on April 30, 2026, Housemarque and Sony have made a Digital Deluxe Edition available for pre-order through the PlayStation Store.
