LE MANS, France – Samuel Guerin, president of the Sarthe dental surgeons order, was re-elected in late March for a four-year term. Facing a challenging environment for dental care in the Sarthe department, Guerin discussed the dentist shortage and potential solutions for emergency care access.

Guerin addressed the reasons behind the shortage,drawing parallels with the challenges faced by general practitioners. “The number of available training slots was reduced for an extended period,” Guerin said. “Now, we are experiencing a wave of retirements that are not being adequately replaced.”
He also noted a shift in work-life balance among younger dentists. “Dentists nearing retirement frequently enough worked 45 to 55 hours per week. This is less common among younger professionals. It effectively requires nearly two new dentists to replace one retiring dentist to maintain service levels.”

Guerin outlined the order’s responsibilities. “At the departmental level, we ensure that any dentist wishing to practice here holds the appropriate qualifications and possesses sufficient language proficiency. Clear dialog is vital in healthcare.”
He added, “Generally, we regulate new practices and ensure adherence to professional standards. We also have the authority to alert the Regional Health Agency, Le Mans Hospital, or the Prefect’s office if specific issues arise.”
