The Saudi-led coalition has dismissed claims by the Houthi armed group that they successfully targeted an Aramco oil facility in Riyadh on October 3, 2026. While the Houthis reported that ballistic missiles and drones caused fires at the site, coalition spokesman Turki al-Maliki described the assertion as misleading and an attempt to divert attention from recent Houthi military losses.

Conflicting accounts of the Riyadh facility strike

The Houthi military spokesman, Yahya Saree, stated in a televised address that the group had executed an attack on the Aramco site in retaliation for ongoing Saudi airstrikes in Sanaa and other Yemeni provinces. A witness cited by Reuters observed a large plume of smoke and fire near an Aramco refinery south of Riyadh on October 3, 2026. However, Saudi authorities provided no immediate confirmation of an attack, and Aramco did not respond to requests for comment, as noted by Reuters.

Military operations in Taiz and the Bab al-Mandeb strait

The exchange of claims follows intensified fighting across several fronts in Yemen. Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili, a spokesman for the internationally recognized Yemeni government forces, reported that government troops carried out 257 targeting operations on October 3, 2026, which he estimated resulted in the deaths of at least 700 Houthi rebels. The Saudi-led coalition followed this with 97 additional strikes on October 4, 2026, targeting Houthi reinforcements in the Taiz axis and the Tor al-Baha front using aircraft, drones, and artillery. Al-Maliki stated the Houthis’ ties to external agendas have brought chaos and devastation to Yemen, suggesting the group is driven to seek illusory victories.

The conflict has remained volatile since the collapse of a 2022 truce in July. In mid-September 2026, Houthi forces seized the port city of Mocha and strategic islands located in the Bab al-Mandeb strait. This area serves as a critical maritime chokepoint for global oil shipments. While anti-Houthi forces have since stabilized front lines, the escalation in hostilities has displaced hundreds of thousands of people.

Regional escalation and the Strait of Hormuz

The reported attack on Riyadh coincides with broader regional tensions involving Iran and the United States. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi noted that a plan from Tehran could reopen the route within seven days if accepted. Meanwhile, Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi of the IRGC claimed that US forces have moved 1,000km away from Iran’s borders, stating, This was not their choice, it was due to the authority of the Islamic Republic and the authority of the IRGC Ground Force. Additionally, state media reported on Sunday that Iran’s oil minister has resigned amid mounting economic pressure.

Amid this climate, Houthi fighters have increasingly targeted energy infrastructure within Saudi Arabia. The group previously claimed responsibility for missile and drone strikes on Aramco facilities in Yanbu, though Saudi officials reported intercepting six ballistic missiles aimed at Taif and Yanbu during that period without confirming damage to the refinery infrastructure, as reported by Reuters. Saudi Arabia has led a military coalition in Yemen since March 2015, following the Houthi seizure of the capital, Sanaa, in 2014.
