Saved the life of a 2-year-old child who choked on a foreign object in his food

HCMC – Today (February 14, the 5th day of Tet), the City Children’s Hospital said it successfully saved a child patient who choked on a foreign object in his food on the 4th day of Tet.

According to Dr. Nguyen Minh Tien – Deputy Director of the City Children’s Hospital, the child patient is LPA (2 years old, Go Vap district, Ho Chi Minh City) admitted to the hospital in a state of restlessness, crying, and a lot of mucus in his mouth.

According to the family, an hour before being admitted to the hospital, the child ate snakehead fish porridge, suddenly coughed, choked, vomited, and turned purple. The family discovered and immediately took the child to the City Children’s Hospital.

Here, the child had difficulty breathing, had a lot of mucus, vomited, did not breastfeed or drink, and was X-rayed on the neck and chest – a piece of foreign object was discovered in the upper esophagus; CT scan was performed – a radiopaque foreign object was recorded in the soft tissue between the esophagus and trachea, with a section still in the esophagus, measuring 13x3x23 mm.

Immediately, the child was consulted with a specialist in gastroenterology and endoscopy to remove a foreign object, a piece of fish bone measuring 1.5×2.5 cm. After removing the foreign object, the child had no difficulty breathing and was alert. “Through this case, we would like to remind parents that when feeding children under 3 years old, they must ensure that all bones (fish) and seeds (fruit) are selected. out and there is always someone to keep, care for and monitor children under 3 years old,” Dr. Tien emphasized.
