The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued warnings for severe weather across several provinces on May 4, 2026, with a primary focus on severe thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape.

The adverse conditions are attributed to a cut-off low system moving over the country. This atmospheric phenomenon is known to trigger prolonged severe weather patterns, including heavy rainfall and intense storm activity.

Eastern Cape Severe Weather Alert

The Eastern Cape is facing the most significant threat, with SAWS issuing an Orange Level 6 warning for severe thunderstorms. This high-level alert indicates a strong likelihood of severe storms that could produce damaging winds, hail, and intense lightning.

The warning specifically highlights the risk of heavy downpours in the Amathole, OR Tambo, and Alfred Nzo districts. Residents in these areas have been advised to exercise caution as the storms may lead to localized flooding.

Regional Forecast and Impact

While the Eastern Cape remains the primary area of concern, other regions are experiencing varying degrees of instability. Widespread rain is forecast for the south-west, while isolated showers are expected in other parts of the country.

The cut-off low system has also influenced conditions in the North West, Northern Cape, and Free State provinces. Previous alerts for these regions included Yellow Level 2 warnings for severe thunderstorms associated with damaging winds and hail, which posed risks to both formal and informal settlements as well as critical infrastructure.

In the Western Cape, weather conditions are expected to improve following the passage of a weekend cold front, according to reports from SAWS.

Atmospheric Conditions and Risks

The current weather pattern is characterized by the interaction of the cut-off low and regional moisture. Forecasters, including SAWS forecaster Moneiwa Singa, have urged residents in the affected provinces to remain vigilant.

Beyond the thunderstorms, the South African Weather Service previously noted that conditions have been favorable for the first frost of the season. These frost risks were identified along the Lesotho border, the southern parts of the Free State and Northern Cape, and the northern regions of the Eastern Cape.

The combination of heavy rainfall and strong winds associated with these systems often leads to flash flooding in low-lying areas and potential damage to power lines and agricultural crops.
