Scottie Scheffler the Clear Favorite at U.S. Open; Bettors pile On
Updated June 12, 2025
Despite facing a challenging course and a strong field, Scottie Scheffler is the overwhelming favorite to win the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club. His odds, listed at +275 by ESPN BET,haven’t deterred bettors, who are backing him heavily.
Scheffler’s odds are the shortest for any men’s golf major since Tiger Woods in 2009. Woods had odds of +225 or shorter for each major that year, but failed to win any of them. Scheffler’s previous best was +325 at the 2024 U.S. Open, where he tied for 41st.
According to ESPN BET, more than 50% of the total money wagered and 22.6% of all bets are on Scheffler to win. Adam Landeka, VP of Sportsbook Strategy & Growth at ESPN BET, noted Scheffler’s consistent performance and popularity drive the short odds.
“Scheffler’s price entering tournament week reflects his consistent performances, knack for showing up in majors, and the outsized betting interest that he garners tournament after tournament, no matter how much of a favorite he is,” landeka said.
Scheffler opened at +500 in the yearlong U.S.Open market, shortening to +400 after his PGA Championship win and +300 after winning the Memorial Tournament. Sportsbooks aren’t necessarily dreading a Scheffler victory, as his short odds limit their potential exposure.
DraftKings sportsbook director johnny Avello said bettors will still wager on Scheffler, even at shorter prices.”I think where the exposure may come in is where he’s close to the lead and it’s in-game wagering, and at that point is when I’ve noticed there’s been a piling up on him [in the past],” Avello said.
bryson DeChambeau, at +750, is the second favorite and also receiving meaningful public support, accounting for over 15% of the handle at several major sportsbooks. His odds have nearly halved from an opening of +1400.
Rory McIlroy’s odds, however, have lengthened considerably due to recent poor form. After winning the Masters in April, he was +550 to win the U.S. Open. Following a missed cut at the Canadian Open, his odds are now +1400, according to ESPN BET.
Caesars Sportsbook lead golf trader Anthony salleroli noted the lack of ”buzz” around McIlroy. “There’s no buzz, he’s almost like a sleeper at this point,” Salleroli said. “I thought for sure we would’ve had three single bullets coming into the U.S. Open…but Rory fell out of that class.”
Other golfers drawing some attention include Jon Rahm (+1200), ludvig Åberg (+2200), Collin Morikawa (+2500), Shane Lowry (+3300), and Harris English (+8000).
Bookmakers attribute the focus on favorites to Oakmont’s difficulty. The course produced winning scores of -4 and +5 in its two most recent U.S. Open stagings.
Matt Wall, BetMGM senior sports trader, said, “A U.S. open at Oakmont is one of the toughest tests these players will face. BetMGM customers are leaning towards the proven quality in the field.”
What’s next
The U.S. Open promises high drama as Scheffler seeks to validate his favorite status, while DeChambeau and others aim to capitalize on any slip-ups. The challenging Oakmont course will test every player’s mettle.
