Rahm Reflects on Near Miss at US PGA Championship
Jon Rahm, aiming to become the first Spaniard to capture the PGA Championship in its 107th year, saw his bid falter despite a strong showing at Quail Hollow. After a string of pars, Rahm surged with birdies, briefly tying for the lead. Ultimately, he couldn’t maintain momentum to overtake Scottie Scheffler.
Rahm acknowledged the disappointment of not closing out the major, especially after being in contention. He emphasized the positive aspects of his performance, suggesting it bodes well for the remainder of the year. This US PGA Championship performance marks a critically important improvement in major results for Rahm as his move to LIV Golf at the end of 2023. His best finish this year had been a tie for seventh at The Open.
Bryson DeChambeau, another perennial contender, also expressed frustration despite securing another top-five finish. He carded a 1-under 70, but couldn’t sustain the necessary momentum.
Early in the day, several players aimed to pressure Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked golfer. However, their efforts largely failed to materialize. On the first hole, Rahm made par while seven of the other eight players in the final groups carded a five.
“There’s been a lot of good happening this week and a lot of positive feelings to take for the rest of the year,” Rahm said. “I think it’s the first time I’ve been in position to win a major that close and haven’t done it.The only times I think I’ve been in the lead in a major on a Sunday,I’ve been able to close it out.”
“It’s another top five and I’m always proud to top five in a major,” DeChambeau said. “I feel like I’m playing good when I’m doing that but it’s disappointing not to get the job done because that’s what I came here to do.”
What’s next
Rahm looks to carry the momentum from this week’s US PGA Championship into upcoming tournaments, aiming to secure a major victory and further solidify his position among golf’s elite. He hopes to leverage the positive feelings from this event for continued success.
