HKBU has awarded scholarships to four student athletes, including Cheung Ka-long and Chan Ho-yuen, in recognition of their outstanding achievements in their respective sports.
The four recipients include Cheung Ka-long, the defending champion in foil at the Olympics, Ma Kwan-ching, a representative of windsurfing, Lo Wai-fung, a representative of taekwondo, and Chan Ho-yuen, the silver medalist in wheelchair badminton at the Paris Paralympics.
Cheung Ka-long expressed his gratitude to his coach, Greg, for his training and support. “I am very grateful to him for giving me relative flexibility, which allows me to relax a little bit psychologically and mentally, and I will play happier when I am on the court,” he said.
Gregory Koenig, Cheung Ka-long’s coach, responded, ”Yes, that’s right. He can win every game more easily, but he knows how to test my heart. That’s why he has to let his opponent take the lead in many games, and then look at me, and he will know how fast my heart is beating.”
Chan Ho-yuen, who has retired from competition, plans to use the scholarship to invest in his future and develop a badminton academy. “I hope it can help more people,” he said. “Because I was able to stand up again after the accident, it was with the help of many people that I became a medal athlete today. I think I will continue to develop in this direction.”
Ho Wan-kei, a double gold medalist in hard court boccia at the Paralympics, also returned to her alma mater as an alumnus to support the event.
The scholarships awarded to these student athletes demonstrate HKBU’s commitment to supporting and recognizing the achievements of its students in various fields, including sports.
