School Secretaries, Caretakers Dispute Before WRC
Pension Talks Resume for School Support Staff, Following Strike Action
Table of Contents
Negotiations aimed at securing improved pension access for school secretaries and caretakers are set to continue today at the Workplace Relations commission (WRC). This resumption of talks follows over a week of strike action by more than 2,600 staff members represented by the Fórsa trade union, which disrupted operations in approximately 2,000 schools nationwide.
Dispute Resolution and Key Demands
Fórsa suspended the strike after reaching an agreement to enter a formal process for resolving the dispute. A central demand of the union is a government commitment to negotiate pension entitlements for thes essential school staff that are equivalent to those currently enjoyed by teachers and Special Needs Assistants (SNAs). This addresses a long-standing disparity in benefits for those providing critical support within the education system.
Initial negotiations at the WRC earlier this month lasted around two hours.Today’s session represents a continuation of those discussions, seeking to build on the progress made.
Broader Agreement Covers Multiple Issues
Beyond pensions, the agreement outlines discussions on several other key areas impacting school support staff. These include improved access to bereavement leave and sick leave provisions, and also finalizing a thorough pay agreement specifically for caretakers.Addressing these concerns demonstrates a holistic approach to improving working conditions and recognizing the value of these roles.
Escalation Pathway to labor Court
To ensure a resolution, the parties have agreed to escalate any unresolved issues following the WRC talks to the Labour Court for further consideration. This provides a clear pathway for continued dialog and a binding mechanism for resolving outstanding disagreements. The Labour Court’s involvement signals a commitment to finding a fair and sustainable solution for all parties involved.
