Irish School Staff Strike Looms Over Pension‍ Dispute

A potential strike by more than 2,300 school secretaries‍ and 500 caretakers across Ireland threatens ⁤to disrupt the reopening of schools after the summer break. The Fórsa trade union said the action, prompted by a dispute over pension⁣ rights, could begin in⁣ August if the matter remains unresolved.

Fórsa reported that its members voted by a ⁣meaningful margin—almost 98%—in favor of striking. The core issue revolves around the exclusion of these staff members from the public service pension scheme,⁣ which is accessible to teachers and special needs assistants.

The union plans to notify ⁢schools of the impending action in the coming‍ week. andy Pike,Fórsa’s head of ⁢education, warned⁤ of potential disruptions. “If the issue is‍ not resolved then there will be no caretakers to ⁢open or⁣ close ⁢the schools and there will be no secretaries to do all of the vital work they do on a daily basis,” he⁣ said.

Pike acknowledged the potential for contingency plans but ⁤emphasized ⁤the importance of support from colleagues and parents.⁤ The⁣ union remains open ⁤to “serious talks” to find a resolution in the coming weeks.

“These are committed professionals who contribute to the accomplished operation of every school, and they should⁢ be entitled to the⁤ same pension rights as thier colleagues across the public service,” Pike said.

The pension issue has been a source of⁢ contention as a previous dispute concerning the status of school secretaries was settled two years‍ ago. Discussions⁢ regarding the standardization of terms⁢ and conditions⁢ for caretakers have ⁣been ongoing.

What’s next

The Department of Education has been contacted for comment as the union prepares to engage in further negotiations to avert ⁢the planned strike action ⁣and resolve the pension⁣ dispute.
