Restructuring the National Ecosystem
The Portuguese government is moving forward with a notable overhaul of its science and technology landscape. Plans are underway to consolidate the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) and the National innovation Agency (ANI) into a single, unified agency dedicated to both research and innovation. This initiative aims to streamline efforts and foster greater synergy between scientific advancement and practical application.
Council Endorsement Provides Key Support
This restructuring strategy recently received a crucial endorsement from the National Science, Technology and Innovation Council. This council serves as the government’s primary advisory body, bringing together representatives from public institutions, research organizations, and private companies. The council’s framework for the scientific and technological system largely aligns with the vision of Minister of education, Science and Innovation, Fernando Alexandre.
Addressing Previous Criticism
The move follows earlier criticism regarding a perceived lack of sector-wide consultation. Minister Alexandre’s team sought and received this important backing to advance the creation of the new Agency for Examination and Innovation (AI2), signaling a commitment to a more collaborative approach.
