ESA M lesbian Asteroid Threat: millones Football Pitch-Sized Rock Could Hit Earth in 2032
Europe’s space agency is keeping a watchful eye on an asteroid named 2024 YR4. This space rock, roughly the size of a football pitch, has a one in 83 chance of striking Earth on December 22, 2032. While it’s currently cruising at a safe distance of about 27 million miles, scientists are monitoring its trajectory closely.
Currently 100 meters by 40 meters in size, the asteroid will skim past Earth, possibly within a few thousand miles. The ESA, which chairs the Space Mission Planning Advisory Group, will review the latest findings next week at a meeting in Vienna.
If the risk is confirmed, the group will advise the United Nations and consider a "spacecraft-based response" to mitigate the potential hazard. However, Dr. Simeon Barber, a space scientist at the Open University, reassures us that we shouldn’t panic yet. Early detection systems often overestimate the likelihood of an impact due to uncertainties in determining the object’s trajectory.
Just two years ago, NASA demonstrated its commitment to protecting our planet by altering the orbit of the 160-meter-wide asteroid Dimorphos. As for 2024 YR4, astronomers first spotted it in Chile this January. They’re racing against time to gather as much data as possible before it fades from view in a few months.
So, what kind of damage could this asteroid cause? The Earth experiences a direct hit from an asteroid of this size roughly once every few thousand years. In 1908, a smaller asteroid exploded over Siberia, flattening 80 million trees over an 830 square-mile area.
