Astronomers have determined the precise dimensions of IC 1101, the largest known galaxy in the observable universe, using high-resolution data from the Isaac Newton Telescope. IC 1101 is located in the center of the Abell 2029 galaxy cluster. It is characterized as a supergiant elliptical galaxy, a structure that differs from the spiral shape of the Milky Way. These galaxies typically form through the merger of multiple smaller galaxies over billions of years.

The scale of IC 1101 significantly exceeds that of the Milky Way. While the Milky Way’s diameter is approximately 100,000 light-years, IC 1101 spans millions of light-years. This disparity places it in a category of galaxies that dominate their respective clusters through immense gravitational pull.
