The 44th UN-Water Meeting convened from October 1 to 2, 2026, at the International Fund for Agricultural Development headquarters in Rome, Italy, where officials reviewed preparations for the upcoming 2026 UN Water Conference, according to SDG Knowledge Hub. UN-Water Chair Alvaro Lario stated at the opening that the 2026 SDG 6 Synthesis Report points to progress alongside persistent fragmentation, under-resourcing, and uneven results. Gulf News reported that 100 young people from 75 countries, selected from more than 2,000 applicants, will prepare over a two-month period to contribute to the summit.

Rome Preparations and Flagship Initiatives for Abu Dhabi

During the Rome sessions, participants discussed proposed flagship initiatives to be launched during the six interactive dialogues of the 2026 UN Water Conference, which will be co-hosted by Senegal and the United Arab Emirates in Abu Dhabi from December 8 to 10, 2026. SDG Knowledge Hub reported that UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy on Water Retno Marsudi identified four tests for a successful conference: delivering action, placing water at the center of sustainable development, demonstrating that multilateralism can deliver, and establishing a pathway for the future of water. Co-Chairs of the conference’s six interactive dialogues outlined multiple flagship proposals, including a house for water concept presented by Germany and Mexico under Water and Multilateral Processes, and a 100 Parties Initiative and Basins for Cooperation framework introduced by Finland and Zambia for Water for Cooperation.

Youth Envoys Join the Global Water Agenda

Gulf News reported that the Arab Youth Center announced the selection of the Global Youth Water Envoys, representing six global regions following an evaluation process managed by an independent committee of 20 representatives from 12 organizations, including UNEP, UNESCO, UNICEF, WaterAid, and the World Water Council. The Envoys will participate in a virtual learning program throughout October and November 2026, starting with foundational training and moving into specialized tracks tied to the conference’s six interactive dialogues. Their discussions are expected to produce six thematic youth statements and a consolidated Global Youth Water Statement. Fatima Behzad Afghan of the UAE stated that attracting investment in water infrastructure requires clear frameworks that reduce risk and recognize the long-term value of resilient systems. Lissong Diop of Senegal stated that scientific data and the knowledge of pastoral communities can both inform water governance.

Countries Propose Frameworks to Accelerate Water and Sanitation Implementation

SDG Knowledge Hub reported that participants at the Rome meeting also considered how to accelerate implementation of the UN System-wide Strategy for Water and Sanitation. For Water for Prosperity, China and Spain highlighted integrated management, circularity, and valuing water in economics and finance. Switzerland and Ghana outlined six workstreams for the Water for People dialogue, covering rights-based approaches, inclusive climate-resilient services, and stronger data. For Investment for Water, France and South Africa proposed encouraging country platforms to coordinate water investment through political support, matchmaking, and de-risking facilities. Egypt and Japan reported work on initiatives connecting water, environment, and climate action for the Water for Planet dialogue.

Future Water Conferences Set for 2027 and 2028

Participants situated the Abu Dhabi conference within a sequence of milestones, including the 11th World Water Forum in Saudi Arabia in March 2027, a high-level preparatory meeting in New York in 2027, and the 2028 UN Water Conference in Tajikistan, according to SDG Knowledge Hub. The 45th UN-Water Meeting is scheduled to be hosted by the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, from May 3 to 4, 2027.
