Irish Independent TD Michael Kelly has announced he will not be running in the upcoming presidential election, citing the largely ceremonial nature of the role. Meanwhile, Minister for Finance paschal Donohoe has indicated strong support for Mairead McGuinness as a potential Fine Gael candidate, though stopping short of a formal endorsement before nominations close.
Kelly Cites Limited Power as Reason for Decision
When questioned about his change of heart, Kelly clarified he hadn’t definitively made up his mind. “I was thinking seriously about it. Adn some days I would say yes, and other days I would say no. It’s obviously you’re head of state. It’s the highest political honor you can get in Ireland,” he stated.
Though, after careful consideration, Kelly concluded the position lacks ample political power. “But when I looked at it deeply. It’s largely a ceremonial role. You don’t have that much power or influence even though you can dress it up whatever way you like and I like to be involved politically.” This assessment highlights a common debate surrounding the Irish presidency – the balance between symbolic representation and genuine executive authority.
Donohoe Signals Support for McGuinness
Paschal Donohoe praised McGuinness as a strong contender. ”Mairead McGuinness, I have no doubt at all would be a fantastic candidate for Fine Gael and also has, I believe, all the qualities needed to be a very effective and excellent president for the people of ireland,” he said. However, Donohoe emphasized the need to await the conclusion of the nomination period before offering a full endorsement.”But as a member of Cabinet and a figure who will be campaigning for whoever the candidate is, I just want to see who else decides to make a decision in relation to it and at the end of all of that then, the party will make its decision.” Nominations within Fine Gael close next week (July 17th), but party sources anticipate little challenge to McGuinness’s expected candidacy.
Opposition Parties Likely to Field Separate Candidates
The political landscape on the left appears fragmented. Opposition parties are leaning towards nominating their own candidates for the presidential election, rather than coalescing around a single agreed-upon nominee.
Leaders from various opposition parties met in Leinster House on Wednesday evening to discuss their strategy, but failed to reach a consensus. Sources indicate they are awaiting a signal from Sinn Féin regarding their intentions – whether the party will pursue a joint left-wing candidate or field its own.
Speculation Surrounds Mary Lou McDonald’s Potential Candidacy
Rumors circulated this week suggesting Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald might consider a presidential bid, fueled by her reluctance to dismiss the possibility. Though, the party has stated that no decisions have been made regarding her potential candidacy. This uncertainty adds another layer of complexity to the developing presidential race.
