Seattle Seahawks Launch “Go the Extra Yard” – A Fun, Gamified Approach to Environmental Sustainability for Fans
The Seattle Seahawks are tackling environmental sustainability in a new and engaging way with their “Go the Extra Yard” campaign. This four-week, gamified project aims to raise awareness among fans and identify the most environmentally conscious member of the Seahawks community.
How it effectively works:
Fans can sign up at GoTheExtraYard.com and earn points by completing everyday eco-kind actions like:
* Recycling bottles
* Choosing car-free transportation
* Using reusable bags
* Unplugging appliances
* Opting for meat-free and dairy-free meals
Participants document their actions with photo verification on the website.
The Prize:
The fan with the most points at the end of the campaign will win tickets and pre-game field passes to the Seahawks vs. Rams game on December 18th! Other prizes include autographed jerseys, gift cards, and team gear.
Beyond the Campaign: Seahawks’ Commitment to Sustainability
This campaign builds on the Seahawks’ existing dedication to sustainability, demonstrated by:
* Lumen Field’s Recognition: The stadium has received the 2024 Green Sports Alliance Energy Player Award and is a 2025 Green Sports Alliance Waste Champion. It’s also pursuing TRUE Zero certification for waste diversion.
* High Waste Diversion Rate: Lumen Field currently diverts 90-95% of its waste through recycling, composting, and donations.
* Environmental Partnerships: The team collaborates with the Puget Sound restoration Fund to restore kelp forests and the Ocean Conservancy for beach clean-ups.
Focus on Fan Engagement:
Seahawks Sustainability Manager Christy Briggs emphasizes the institution’s shift towards fan engagement.The goal is to empower fans to make a collective impact by demonstrating that sustainable choices can be simple, fun, and effective. Briggs hopes the campaign will broaden fan knowledge of the team’s sustainability efforts and inspire action, ultimately contributing to a “cleaner, better, and healthier” planet.
