A second Australian reported missing following catastrophic flash flooding on the Nepal-Tibet border has been found alive, according to Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong, even as the overall disaster death toll surpassed 950 lives with more than 4,000 people still unaccounted for.

The positive update on Tuesday follows the earlier rescue of Wollongong hiker Cara Severino over the weekend, offering a measure of relief amid what officials describe as an extraordinarily difficult recovery effort. Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed that the second survivor has been in contact with government officials from Tibet after spending days unaccounted for following the glacial collapse high in the Himalayan region.

Despite these survivals, the scale of the disaster remains immense. More than 4,000 individuals are still missing, a figure that includes 42 Australian nationals. Among the confirmed fatalities is New South Wales man Michael Keats, a support teacher at Moruya High School who was travelling to India for a spiritual retreat when the flash floods struck six days ago.

Search Challenges and International Aid

Recovery teams on the ground face severe logistical hurdles as they try to reach isolated zones. According to Foreign Minister Penny Wong, search conditions remain extremely challenging due to destroyed infrastructure and severed communications lines.

As grave concerns grow for the thousands remaining missing, the Australian government has dispatched its first delivery of humanitarian aid to Nepal. Supplies were loaded onto a C-17 Globemaster aircraft at the Royal Australian Air Force base in Amberley, southwest of Brisbane, on Tuesday. Australian officials are coordinating closely with local authorities and regional partners to assist those affected and locate remaining missing persons.

Meanwhile, families of other missing Australians continue to await news. Luke Costanzo, a 30-year-old from Perth, remains unaccounted for after trekking to Mount Kailash, a sacred Himalayan site. His family reported that his group’s last contact occurred at the Gyirong port border crossing while returning to Kathmandu on the final day of their trip.
