Second Chance: Starting a New Life Chapter

Cauvery Madhavan, acclaimed author of The Inheritance, faced a life-altering experience that reshaped her perspective and ignited a passion for living life too the fullest. A sudden stroke, followed by an improbable recovery, served not as a tragedy, but as a powerful wake-up call. This is the story of how a “lucky stroke” propelled her to embrace new adventures and redefine her priorities.
From Paralysis to Miraculous Recovery
The initial moments were terrifying. Madhavan recounts the sudden onset of paralysis and speech loss, vividly remembering the anxious faces of those she knew. “I was taken straight to the ward,” she recalls, “and then, like an on/off switch, I got everything back in one moment.”
this wasn’t a gradual enhancement; it was instantaneous. Her speech returned, the paralysis vanished – a moment of miraculous recovery witnessed by her husband, Prakash, who was understandably in shock.
Medical investigations revealed the cause: a tear in the carotid artery. A fragment had travelled to the brain, triggering the frist stroke. Remarkably, it then moved away, restoring her faculties. However, another piece later lodged in a smaller artery, causing a second stroke. The fact that this also dislodged was deemed an “absolute miracle” by her medical team.
“It’s quite a miraculous thing,” Madhavan reflects. She was prescribed aspirin to thin her blood and advised to address previously undiagnosed high blood pressure. This diagnosis became the catalyst for a complete lifestyle overhaul.
A Health Transformation and Overcoming Fear
Madhavan didn’t simply make minor adjustments; she embraced a holistic transformation. She became meticulous about her salt intake, substantially reducing portion sizes without eliminating foods she enjoyed. Crucially, she incorporated regular walking and exercise into her routine.Though, the physical changes were only part of the battle. A critically important psychological barrier emerged - the constant fear of another stroke. For a year, she experienced tingling in her arms and fingertips, 15 to 20 times a day, each sensation triggering a wave of panic. “Every time I thought, ‘That’s it now’,” she admits.
This anxiety manifested in an almost constant need to have her mobile phone within reach, a lifeline she feared losing should another stroke occur. It was prakash who delivered a dose of harsh, but necesary, realism. “If you have another stroke, you’re not going to be able to use the phone,” he pointed out.
The blunt truth, though initially unsettling, sparked a moment of clarity. Madhavan burst out laughing, realizing the logic in his statement. “That was when I moved on from the psychological trauma.”
Embracing Life’s Adventures
Madhavan now views her experience as a “lucky stroke” – a warning that spurred her to live more intentionally. “I could have had a terrible outcome.Instead I got a warning.” And she certainly heeded that warning.
The aftermath of her recovery wasn’t marked by caution, but by a newfound zest for life. She embarked on adventures she’d previously only dreamed of: walking the Camino de Santiago, reaching Everest Base Camp, and even taking up golf, culminating in winning an all-Ireland medal.”I never say no to anything now,” she declares.”It’s not that I have no fear – just I got a second chance and I’m not going to waste it.” This philosophy permeates her life, driving her to embrace every opportunity with enthusiasm and gratitude.
