Israel’s public prosecution is investigating a case of leaking security information, which it described as “sensitive” involving the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to the Israeli press.

According to the Jerusalem Post, the Rishan Legion Magistrate’s Court announced the arrest of several suspects in a statement on Friday in connection with the leak of confidential documents from the Prime Minister’s Office.

“This threatens sensitive data and sources of information, as well as harming the achievement of the war’s objectives in the Gaza Strip,” the Israeli newspaper Maariv quoted Judge Menachem Mizrahi as saying.

Quoting Mizrahi, the newspaper added that, “Last week a joint investigation between the General Security Service (Shin Bet), the Israel Police and the Israeli Army began, related to the suspicion of a security breach due to the illegal provision of secret information.”

Although Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office has denied involvement in the case, “contrary to the false reports and appearances they are trying to portray in the media, no one from the prime minister’s office has been investigated or arrested,” according to Maariv newspaper.

According to Israeli 12, the response of other offices is being examined, indicating the involvement of other officials’ offices in the case.

Yedioth Ahronoth, citing sources familiar with the case, said the detained suspect was a “scapegoat,” indicating that other officials may have played a larger role in the series of leaks, according to it.

It added, “Authorities are continuing to investigate whether senior officials indirectly authorized the unauthorized release of classified documents to foreign media.”

Israeli media say that Netanyahu’s office wanted to appoint a man as the official security spokesman, but he did not receive a security clearance from the General Security Service (Shin Bet), due to what it described as “suspicions”. The Jerusalem Post.

Although he did not receive permission, the newspaper said, he “went to talks with Netanyahu at the Hakkariya military base and secret military units, and the minutes of meetings of the Council of Political Security Ministers and sensitive security discussions were also released.”

According to the Jerusalem Post, the Prime Minister’s Office responded shortly after that one of the arrested persons was not an official employee of the office.

However, Maariv newspaper published a screenshot from Israeli Channel 12 that clearly shows the prisoner attending the hearing in the prime minister’s office.

A person close to the detainee told Israeli Channel 12: “He – the detainee – worked for Netanyahu and was his adviser for the last year and a half.”

He added that he had “dedicated his entire life to the prime minister and was willing to risk himself for him, but as the news spread, Netanyahu threw him under the wheel and lied that he did not work for him.”

The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper reported that insiders confirmed that “the suspect maintained close ties to Netanyahu’s inner circle, where he conducted diplomatic missions under the supervision of Netanyahu’s chief of staff, Zachi Braverman.”

The Jerusalem Post said the information was leaked to German news site Bild and other Israeli journalists, leading to a report published last September.

The Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper explained that the report “reveals a document written by Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.”

“The document details Hamas’ negotiating strategy with Israel and suggests how to manage the international community while rebuilding military capabilities and intensifying pressure on Israel,” according to it.

It turned out that another report appeared in the Jewish Chronicle citing a Hamas document, which claimed that Hamas wanted to transfer hostages to Iran or Yemen through the Philadelphia Corridor, prompting Israeli army investigators to consider the document a “forgery”. Meaning it is not written by Sinwar according to Yedioth Ahronoth.

Within days of the publication of these reports, both Bild and the Jewish Chronicle faced backlash, with the Chronicle retracting its story after determining that the aforementioned documents had no basis and the author’s name was fabricated.

Yedioth Ahronoth said the revelation “prompted further investigation into how materials seized from Hamas were manipulated to influence Israeli public opinion on the Gaza war.”

Israel’s opposition leader Yar Lapid and National Unity Party chief Benny Gantz blamed the prime minister for the leak.

Gantz responded to the statement from Netanyahu’s office, saying, “Without going into the details of the case under investigation regarding the activities of the prime minister’s office, it is important to emphasize one thing, the prime minister is responsible for what happens in his office. For better or for worse.”

Commenting on the matter on the Lapid “X” platform, “The Prime Minister, as usual, is trying to distance himself from the matter and put the blame on others, but the facts say the opposite: he is personally responsible for every paper, word, and information issued from his office. “

In turn, the Prime Minister’s Office responded to Lapid’s statement, saying, “It is not a coincidence that the Prime Minister demanded the immediate withdrawal of the moratorium on the investigation, the continued implementation of which aims to discredit his office,” according to the statement. Mariv newspaper.

The office added, “There have been dozens of leaks published in the media at home and abroad detailing negotiations for the return of hostages, secret cabinet meetings and other sensitive forums, without anyone investigating. I wonder why?”

Yedioth Ahronoth believes the secret leak investigation has intensified tensions between Netanyahu’s office and the Israeli defense establishment, highlighting growing rifts over Gaza policy and hostage negotiations.
