A Powerful start to the Second Half
Chicago Cubs outfielder Seiya Suzuki has hit the ground running as the second half of the season kicks off, demonstrating the same potent production that has anchored the heart of the Cubs’ lineup all year. His impactful swing on Friday was more than just a highlight; it was a clear signal that Suzuki is picking up right where he left off, much to the delight of his teammates.
“He’s obviously picked up right where he left off,” said Pete Crow-Armstrong, Suzuki’s teammate. “I hope he approaches the second half for himself as just an chance to show everybody what could’ve happened to him for the All-Star break. … Seiya has been doing it for us,and he’s pretty incredible. I just hope that he continues to let himself do that and I think he’ll be just fine.”
Surprising Himself with Success
Suzuki himself has been pleasantly surprised by his own performance this season. When asked if this is the best season he’s had in baseball,he readily agreed, stating,”I would say so.” He expressed his astonishment at his own output, particularly in the RBI and home run categories. “I’m surprised myself with how much RBIs I’ve been getting, how much home runs I’ve been getting,” Suzuki added.”I never would’ve thought that those numbers would be there, so I just wont to stay consistent with it and take it into the second half.”
The Unexpected Benefits of a Break
Despite his stellar first-half performance, Suzuki did not receive an All-Star nod.Though, he found unexpected benefits in the respite provided by the break. While he declined an invitation to the Home Run Derby, joking that he couldn’t win it anyway,he also humorously admitted to sleeping through the All-Star Game itself.
All jokes aside, Suzuki expressed genuine gratitude for the few days of rest. He noted that this is the first time in his four-year career that he hasn’t missed a notable portion of the first half due to injury, which allowed a bit of fatigue to build up. Even a short break, he explained, provided a crucial opportunity to rest his body and prepare for the demanding second half of the season.
Leading the Charge for a Playoff Push
The 58-39 Cubs are heavily relying on Suzuki to continue his leadership role within one of baseball’s most potent offenses as they aim to secure the NL Central title over the next two-plus months. It’s possible that the rest he gained during the All-Star break played a significant role in his explosive performance to kick off the stretch run.
“Seiya got a lot of good family time [over the break],” Crow-Armstrong remarked. “I’m glad he got his sleep. I just want a rested Seiya every day. That’s a good Seiya. That’s the best Seiya.” With Suzuki firing on all cylinders, the Cubs are well-positioned to make a deep postseason run.
