LOS ANGELES – amidst Hollywood’s elite,Selena Gomez took the stage at the Academy Women’s Luncheon,using her platform to shine a light on a critical issue: prioritizing mental health and supporting underserved communities.
“It’s about taking action to ensure that underserved communities have access to mental health resources,” Gomez said Tuesday at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.The singer-actor, known for her candor about her own mental health journey, including a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, emphasized the importance of collective action.
Gomez’s commitment to this cause extends beyond words. In 2020,she launched the Rare Impact Fund and Rare Beauty,a cosmetics line,pledging to donate 1% of all sales to expand mental health services and education for young people.
“It’s about showing them that when we come together, we can make a real difference,” said Gomez, who recently earned Golden Globe nominations for her roles in “Emilia Pérez” and “Only murders in the Building.”
The luncheon, sponsored by Chanel, brought together a constellation of stars, including Ariana Grande, Olivia Wilde, Amy Adams, Pamela Anderson, Sarah Paulson, Regina King, Rita Wilson, Ava DuVernay, and Awkwafina. Many attendees donned Chanel creations, highlighting the brand’s longstanding support of women in film.
Gomez reflected on the importance of amplifying women’s voices, drawing on her experience working on “Emilia Pérez,” a film she described as featuring “unusual” women both in front of and behind the camera. She praised director Jacques Audiard for fostering an environment where “every single voice is heard and valued.”
“It reminded me of the power of community, supporting and lifting up each other — whether in film, music or life itself,” she said.
The event also celebrated the Academy Gold Fellowship for Women, a program supporting emerging female filmmakers. Gomez commended the initiative, stating, “It is honestly such an honor to be in this room with so many women that I love and have inspired me throughout the years. They continue to empower me, not only in our industry, but around the world.”
