Republican Senator Eric Schmitt supports Tulsi Gabbard amid allegations of her foreign loyalty. President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence, despite concerns from both parties about her ties to Russia.
In an interview with Kristen Welker on Meet the Press, Schmitt labeled the suggestion that Gabbard has anti-American connections as a “slur.” He stated he is “absolutely” in favor of her leading US intelligence.
Welker raised the issue referencing comments by Nikki Haley, who accused Gabbard of sympathizing with hostile nations. Haley questioned Gabbard’s qualifications for the role, saying, “This is not a place for a Russian, Iranian, Syrian, Chinese sympathizer,” and expressed unease about her leadership in national intelligence.
Schmitt defended Gabbard, emphasizing her military service and congressional experience. He criticized the tendency to label those with differing political views as foreign assets, calling it “ridiculous.” He stated, “There’s no evidence that she’s the asset of another country,” and highlighted her commitment to the Constitution and civil liberties.
Schmitt believes Gabbard represents needed reform in intelligence, suggesting she is not part of the typical political circles. He expressed that her nomination reflects Trump’s attention to the concerns of American citizens.
When asked if he would vote for Gabbard, Schmitt confirmed his support, saying, “I’m a yes on Tulsi Gabbard, absolutely,” and included his backing for other controversial nominees as well.
