The European Commission approved €125.81 million in grants on 17 September 2026 to fund construction work on three cross-border renewable energy projects, according to CINEA. The funding decisions follow the formal adoption of an updated list of Cross-Border Renewable Energy projects on 11 September 2026, which entered into force on 1 October 2026 with 15 projects holding official status. Funding the German-Polish Heating Network
CINEA reported that €70.0 million of the newly allocated European Union funds will support the final works sub-project under the UNITED HEAT initiative. Officially titled the Unified Network for Innovative Transition in Energy Decarbonisation of HEATing, the project connects Görlitz in Germany and Zgorzelec in Poland. The latest grant covers the construction of a cross-border pipeline that enables physical heat exchange and system balancing between the two municipalities. The overarching project secured Cross-Border Renewable Energy status in 2022 and previously advanced through a studies phase alongside two earlier works sub-projects in 2024 and 2025. Decarbonising Słubice and Frankfurt
A second grant of €11.41 million targets the TWIN-HEAT project linking Słubice in Poland and Frankfurt (Oder) in Germany, as detailed by CINEA. The funding will replace existing coal-fired heat generation units in the Słubice regional sector with two modern biomass boilers. Each new biomass boiler will utilize sustainable wood chips and feature a thermal capacity of 6 megawatts. The initiative aims to fully decarbonise district heating in Słubice while initiating deep decarbonisation efforts across the border in Frankfurt. Connecting Latvian and Lithuanian Wind Power
The third award provides €44.40 million to support the first development stage of the UELJO WP project near the Latvia–Lithuania border, according to CINEA. The European Commission originally granted Cross-Border Renewable Energy status to the project in 2025. Next Funding Calls and Programme Schedule
Eligible project developers seeking support under the Cross-Border Renewable Energy window of the Connecting Europe Facility can apply during the next call for proposals. CINEA noted that the upcoming CEF Energy call is expected to open in November 2026.
