The Growing Gap in Cardiovascular Health
A new study reveals a concerning trend: older adults with existing heart conditions are significantly less likely to prioritize key lifestyle factors known to protect cardiovascular health. Researchers found that individuals with high blood pressure, stroke history, or heart failure consistently score lower on the american Heart Association’s Life’s Essential 8 checklist compared to their healthier peers.

What is Life’s Essential 8?
Life’s Essential 8 is a comprehensive framework developed by the American Heart Association to assess and improve cardiovascular health. It encompasses eight key components:
- Diet: Following a heart-healthy eating pattern.
- Exercise: Engaging in regular physical activity.
- Nicotine Exposure: Avoiding smoking and vaping.
- Sleep: Getting 7-9 hours of quality sleep per night.
- Weight: Maintaining a healthy weight.
- Cholesterol: Managing cholesterol levels.
- Blood Sugar: Controlling blood sugar levels.
- Blood Pressure: Keeping blood pressure within a healthy range.
Each component is scored, providing an overall cardiovascular health score. A higher score indicates better cardiovascular health and a lower risk of heart disease and stroke.
The Study Details
Researchers analyzed data from over 3,000 adults aged 65 and older who participated in the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2013 and 2018. Participants’ responses were used to estimate their adherence to each element of Life’s Essential 8. The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, revealed a stark contrast in scores. Those without heart disease averaged 68 out of 100,while those with heart disease averaged below 60.
“On average, participants with one cardiovascular disease had a Life’s Essential 8 score 9 points lower than those without cardiovascular disease,” noted James Walker, a medical student at Northwestern University in Chicago, who led the research.
| Condition | Average Life’s Essential 8 Score | Decline in Adherence over Time |
|---|---|---|
| No Cardiovascular Disease | 68 | N/A |
| High blood Pressure | Below 60 | 4% |
| Stroke Survivor | Below 60 | 12% |
| Heart Failure Patient | Below 60 | 15% |
Why the Discrepancy?
The study pinpointed low scores in physical activity and blood pressure control as primary drivers of the gap. Individuals with cardiovascular disease consistently reported lower levels of exercise and struggled to maintain healthy blood pressure levels. Furthermore, adherence to Life’s Essential 8 tended to worsen with each additional heart condition a person had.
What Can Be Done?
Researchers emphasize the need for proactive intervention and support from healthcare professionals. “Health care professionals and physicians should seek to provide support earlier in life to help our elderly population stay healthier for longer,” Walker stated. Dr. Stacey Rosen, volunteer president of the American Heart Association, echoed this sentiment, urging a focus on preventative care starting in childhood. “Its also critical that we recognise that our aging population is quickly growing,” she added, noting the increasing number of Baby Boomers entering their senior years.
