Sinjil, West Bank - A 20-year-old american citizen, Saif Musalat, was beaten to death by israeli settlers in the Palestinian village of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, the Palestinian Ministry of Health reported yesterday. Musalat, who was visiting the West Bank from his home in Florida to spend time with relatives, was described by his family as a “kind, hard-working and deeply respected” young man with strong ties to his Palestinian heritage.
the family, in a statement issued by their lawyer Diana Halum, expressed devastation at his death, stating that Musalat was on his family’s land attempting to protect it from settlers who were allegedly trying to seize it. They further alleged that Israeli settlers blocked an ambulance and paramedics from reaching Musalat after the attack, leading to his death before he could be transported to a hospital.
“This is an unimaginable nightmare and an injustice that no family should ever have to face,” the family stated, demanding an immediate investigation by the US State Department and accountability for the settlers involved.
Second Palestinian Fatality Reported in Settler Attack
The Palestinian Ministry of Health also confirmed the death of a second man, 23-year-old Mohammed Rizq Hussein al-Shalabi, who was shot during the same incident. He reportedly died after being left to bleed for hours.
Israel’s military, however, claimed that violence erupted after Palestinians threw rocks at a group of Israeli settlers. This incident is the latest in a series of escalating clashes involving settlers in the occupied West Bank.
US State Department Responds to Citizen’s Death
The US State Department acknowledged the death of an American citizen in the West Bank, offering its “sincerest condolences to the family and loved ones on their loss.” A spokesperson emphasized that the safety and security of US citizens overseas is a top priority but referred questions regarding any investigation to the Government of israel.
Rising Settler Violence and West Bank Tensions
Rights groups have widely condemned the increasing violence perpetrated by Israeli settlers in the West Bank, a territory occupied by Israel as 1967. The United Nations has noted that such attacks against Palestinians frequently enough occur within a climate of impunity.
Journalists recently witnessed clashes between dozens of Israeli settlers and Palestinians in Sinjil, where a planned march against settler attacks on local farmland was scheduled. Israeli authorities have also recently erected a important fence, effectively cutting off parts of Sinjil from Road 60, a major north-south artery through the West Bank.
The violence in the West Bank has seen a marked increase since the October 2023 attack on israel by Hamas, which triggered Israel’s ongoing military operations in Gaza. Palestinian health ministry figures indicate that at least 955 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli troops or settlers in the occupied West Bank since that time. Israeli official figures report that at least 36 Israelis, including both soldiers and civilians, have been killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations during the same period.
