On Oct. 15, 2026, at 7:30 p.m., the Centro de Investigación y Recursos de las Artes Escénicas de Andalucía in Seville will host the presentation of the book ‘Tragedia griega y teatro andaluz‘ by Marta C. Cuevas Caballero, a professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the Universidad Pablo de Olavide. Published by the Fundación Centro de Estudios Andaluces, the volume originates from a doctoral thesis defended at the university in September 2024 and launches the new Patrimonio y Cultura de Andalucía collection within the CENTRA Humanidades publishing project.
Four Andalusian Productions Adapt Ancient Greek Tragedies
The publication examines four contemporary Andalusian theatrical productions adapted from ancient Greek tragedies. The featured works include La Cuadra de Sevilla’s staging of ‘Las bacantes’ from 1987, Atalaya’s productions of ‘Elektra’ (1996) and ‘Medea, la extranjera’ (2004), and Induo Teatro’s ‘Prometeo’ from 2014.
The study explores the staging characteristics, dramatic devices, and contemporary themes of these productions, while also evaluating their reception in specialized press and criticism across Andalusia and beyond. The book investigates how classical theatre themes connect with modern Andalusian identity and address issues such as violence, xenophobia, inequality, corruption, and oppression.
