Shaboozey Addresses Viral AMAs Reaction: Megan Moroney Not the Target
updated May 28, 2025
Following a viral moment at the 2025 American Music Awards, country music star Shaboozey clarified that his reaction was not aimed at his co-presenter, Megan moroney. The incident occurred after Moroney, reading from the teleprompter, stated that the award they were presenting had been previously given to The Carter Family, “who basically invented country music.” Shaboozey’s side-eye was caught on camera, quickly becoming a meme.
Shaboozey took to social media to defend Moroney, emphasizing that she did not write the script. ”Just want to clear something up: my reaction at the AMAs had nothing to do with Megan moroney!” he wrote on Moroney’s Instagram post. He further described her as “an incredibly talented, hard-working artist who’s doing amazing things for country music,” adding that he has “nothing but respect for her.”
The AMAs moment sparked some negative comments directed at Moroney, which Shaboozey addressed directly. “I’ve seen some hateful comments directed at her today, and that’s not what this moment was about,” he stated. “Let’s not twist the message — she is amazing and someone who represented the country community in the highest light.”
Earlier in the day, Shaboozey posted on X, formerly Twitter, about the history of country music. “When you uncover the true history of country music, you find a story so powerful that it cannot be erased…,” he wrote.
The real history of country music is about people coming together despite their differences, and embracing and celebrating the things that make us alike.

The Carter Family, who were honored at the first AMAs, were pioneers in American folk music, known for hits such as “Wabash Cannonball” and “Can the circle Be Unbroken.” June Carter, later known as June carter Cash, was famously portrayed by Reese Witherspoon in the film Walk the Line.
The reference to The Carter Family was unrelated to Beyoncé, who secured two AMAs for her Cowboy Carter album.
What’s next
Shaboozey is expected to continue his rise in the country music scene, advocating for a more inclusive and historically accurate understanding of the genre.
