Palm Beach Gardens, Florida – Shane Lowry arrives at this week’s Cognizant Classic at PGA National with a simple calculation in mind: a busy stretch of tournament golf is made significantly more appealing by the comfort of staying close to home. While many of the world’s top players are conserving energy ahead of next week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational and the prestigious Players Championship, Lowry is embracing a five-week run of events that began at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am and will continue through the Players.

“I think if it was five weeks in a row and there was no home weeks in there, I wouldn’t play five weeks in a row,” Lowry explained. “I think the fact I’m staying at home this week makes it easier.” The convenience extends beyond simply sleeping in his own bed. Lowry will be able to drive to Bay Hill for next week’s Arnold Palmer Invitational, eliminating travel hassles and allowing his family to join him at both Bay Hill and The Players.

But the appeal of the Cognizant Classic isn’t solely logistical. Lowry has a proven track record at PGA National’s Champion Course, a layout he clearly enjoys. His recent results speak for themselves: a runner-up finish in 2022, tied fifth in 2023, tied fourth in 2024, and tied 11th last year. “I need to take advantage of the courses that I play well on and that I like playing,” he stated. “There’s certain times you just have to do it.”

The course itself, originally designed by Tom Fazio and later upgraded by Jack Nicklaus, presents a formidable test. The famed “Bear Trap” – holes 15 through 17 – is notorious for its water hazards and demanding approach shots. Recent modifications have reduced the number of bunkers on holes 13 and 16, while the 10th hole has been lengthened to a par 5. Water comes into play on 15 of the 18 holes, demanding precision and strategic thinking.

Lowry’s solid form this season further fuels his optimism. He narrowly missed out on a win at the Dubai Invitational, finishing tied third after a costly double bogey, and followed that with a tied 26th at the Dubai Desert Classic. His return to the PGA Tour saw a top-10 finish at Pebble Beach and a tied 24th at the Genesis.

The field at the Cognizant Classic is noticeably less star-studded than usual, with Ryan Gerard, ranked 26th in the world, as the highest-ranked player. Lowry (30th) and Aaron Rai (32nd) will join Billy Horschel in a marquee group for the opening rounds. Lowry acknowledged the situation, noting that the tournament’s position in the schedule – sandwiched between the West Coast swing and the Florida swing’s signature events – likely contributes to the lighter field. “I’m sure every tournament, bar the signature events, don’t get the fields that they’d want,” he said. “I think it is in a very tough spot in the schedule.”

Séamus Power, who missed the cut at both Pebble Beach and the Genesis, returns to action at the Cognizant Classic. He has made three cuts in as many starts this season, with a best finish of tied 11th at the Farmers Insurance Open.

The $9.6 million tournament offers a substantial $1.7 million prize to the winner. Lowry, with his history at PGA National and current form, is among the betting favorites at 14-1, trailing only Gerard at 12-1. Other notable contenders include Nicolai Hojgaard (16-1) and Will Zalatoris (33-1).

Lowry’s appreciation for Florida course set-ups is evident. “I really enjoy this tournament, Bay Hill, Players. I really enjoy going to play the Valspar, even though I might not play this year,” he said. He also expressed a preference for more traditional course setups, acknowledging that this week’s conditions may differ.

As Lowry prepares to tee off alongside Horschel and Rai, he’s focused on capitalizing on a course he knows well and maintaining momentum during a demanding stretch of the PGA Tour season. The Cognizant Classic, despite its less-heralded field, presents a valuable opportunity for Lowry to continue his strong form and position himself for success in the weeks to come.

Live coverage of the Cognizant Classic will begin at 11:45 am on Sky Sports+, and at 4:00 pm on Sky Sports Golf.
