Sharon Stone Voices Sharp Skepticism Over “Basic Instinct” Reboot
Sharon Stone is not convinced a reboot of the 1992 erotic thriller Basic Instinct is a worthwhile endeavor. The actress, who starred as Catherine Tramell in the original and its 2006 sequel, has publicly expressed her doubts about the project, currently being scripted by Joe Eszterhas, the original film’s writer.
Speaking on the US television program Today,Stone referenced the poor reception of Basic Instinct 2,which earned just $38 million (£28 million) worldwide – a stark contrast to the original’s $353 million (£261 million) box office haul. She offered a blunt assessment: “If it goes the way the one that I was in went, I would just say, I don’t know why you’d do it… go ahead, but good fucking luck.”
In a recent interview with the Guardian, Stone was even more direct, stating, “There’s not going to be a Basic Instinct reboot.I hate to break it to you, but Joe Eszterhas couldn’t write himself out of a Walgreens drug store.” This sentiment underscores a deep lack of confidence in the project’s creative direction.
A Career Interrupted, and Resumed
Stone, currently promoting the action sequel Nobody 2, reflected on her career trajectory. She acknowledged her dominance in the 1990s, but also spoke candidly about the challenges she faced after suffering a brain haemorrhage following a stroke in 2001. This health crisis temporarily halted her career.
“I want to leave it on the screen,” Stone said, “because it lasts for ever, and I won’t. And I’m sure of that.” This statement reveals a desire to solidify her legacy through her work,a sentiment that perhaps contributes to her reluctance to revisit a role she feels has already reached its peak.
Eszterhas Defends His Vision
Despite Stone’s reservations, Joe Eszterhas, 80, remains enthusiastic about the reboot. He recently secured a deal with Amazon MGM guaranteeing a $2 million (£1.5 million) fee for the script, potentially rising to $4 million (£3 million) if the film is greenlit – making it the most lucrative spec script sale of the year.
In a statement to The Wrap, Eszterhas addressed concerns about his age and creative abilities, stating, “To those who question what an 80-year-old man is doing writing a sexy, erotic thriller: the rumours of my cinematic impotence are exaggerated and ageist.” He described his creative process with characteristic flair, referring to his inner muse as the “TWISTED LITTLE MAN” and promising a “wild and orgasmic ride” for viewers.
