She participated in “Haroun Al-Rashid” and “Shajarat Al-Durr”.. Who is Thanaa Al-Debsi?

The Syrian artist, Thanaa Debsi, topped the trend after her departure from our world yesterday evening, at the age of 82, after a struggle with illness, and in the following lines, “Al-Masry Al-Youm” monitors the most prominent stations in the late woman’s journey.

The Syndicate of Artists in the Syrian Arab Republic, through its page on the social networking site “Facebook”, announced the news of the artist’s passing, and wrote: “The Syndicate of Artists in the Syrian Arab Republic mourns to you the death of the distinguished colleague, the artist, Thanaa Debsi. Our heartfelt condolences to the distinguished colleague, the artist, Salim Sabri, in his affliction, for his soul. May mercy and peace be upon us, and you and her loved ones have sincere condolences and solace.”

Between acting and singing stanzas…the beginnings of Thanaa Debsi

Thanaa Debsi was born in the city of Aleppo in 1941. She began her acting journey when she was a young girl at school parties in her city. She learned to dance the Samah, and sing songs and Qudud. She then moved on to participate in artistic activities organized by the Popular Theater Club troupe in Aleppo, and was trained by the late musician. Bahjat Hassan, which helped her develop her speaking skills as well as her passion for reading books, especially theater and psychology, which she relied on to analyze the characters she was based on.

Because acting on stage fascinated her from the beginning, she would participate in at least three productions during one theatrical season, and it is recorded that she was one of the first actors to contribute to the launch of the National Theater in Syria, in the early sixties, and through it she presented many performances, including; “Heroes of Our Country” and “School of Scandals.”

Between motherhood and comedy… Thanaa Debsi’s journey in drama

Thanaa Debsi, her character, forced the directors of the drama to frame her within the framework of a compassionate mother, while she sought change, as she preferred to perform different roles, especially the comedic characters that appealed to her.

“Debsy” performed with the drama in many roles that became entrenched in the viewer’s memory, such as: “Haret Al-Qasr,” “Haroun Al-Rashid,” “Shajarat Al-Durr,” “The Second Story of the Biography of Bani Hilal,” and “The Green Princess.” “Wolves,” “Abu Kamel,” “Green Hearts,” “The Iron Gate,” “Biography of the Jalali family,” “Rainbow 2,” “The Four Seasons,” “Letters of Love and War,” and “The Interpreter of Longings.”

Her acting performance was characterized by strong identification with the character’s psychological state and controlled emotion. She participated in three films produced by the General Cinema Foundation, namely “The Deceived,” “Al-Lajat,” and “A Little Time.”

Honors received by Thanaa Debsi during her career

During her rich artistic career, the late Thanaa Debsi received many awards and honors, including: being honored at the Damascus Theater Festival in 2004, and she was one of the honorees within the Syrian Culture Celebration in 2020.
