Netanyahu Fires Defense Minister Amid US Election
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to fire his Defense Minister, Yoav Galant, has sparked interest among American voters, particularly in the Arab community.
Netanyahu announced Galant’s dismissal and appointed Israel Katz as the new foreign minister. The White House responded by stating that Galant “was an important factor in protecting Israel and will continue to work with the next Secretary of Defense of the United States.”
The move raises questions about its potential impact on Arab voters in the US election, given their concerns over the Biden-Harris administration’s handling of the Gaza war.
Both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have pledged to work towards ending the war, but Arab voters appear to be divided in their support. Some will vote for Harris, while others will support Trump or a third-party candidate.
David Warren, vice president of the Arab America Foundation, expressed uncertainty about the direction of Arab voters, stating that “today there is a sense of genocide going on. And an administration that is taking place and continuing this genocide… will affect some people’s decision to vote for Harris.”
Adoye Oyelowo, a member of the Democratic House of Representatives, noted that “emotions are running high and what is at stake is very important. The vice president said he will monitor the situation and have a position. The other side will give the Israelis a blank check for what they want.”
Netanyahu explained the minister’s dismissal, stating that “in the midst of war, more than ever, there is a need for complete trust between the prime minister and the defense minister.” He added that the trust between him and Galant had eroded in recent months, becoming a “public issue.”
Netanyahu emphasized that the crisis of trust between him and Galant was not just his own concern, but also shared by most government members and the mini-ministry council.
