Skyranger 30: A Mobile Ground-Based Air Defense System
The Skyranger 30 is a cutting-edge mobile ground-based air defense system (GBAD) developed by Rheinmetall Air Defense AG, formerly known as Oerlikon. Launched in March 2021, this system is designed to effectively counter air and ground threats at short and extremely short ranges.
The Skyranger 30’s design is based on the general configuration of the Skyranger 35, with a remote turret featuring a diameter of 1.41m. However, it boasts a lighter weight, ranging from 2 to 2.5 tons, allowing for installation on wheeled vehicles with a 6×6 configuration tire. This system is designed to operate both independently and within the air defense network.
Equipped with the capability to fire ABM missiles that explode in the air and disperse 200g of tungsten submunitions, the Skyranger 30 is optimized against small drones. Notably, the system is integrated with the Spexer 2000M 3D MkIII radar, capable of simultaneously tracking up to 300 targets within a range of 40km. Additionally, it features a 30mm x 173 KCE revolver cannon with an effective range of up to 3,000m.
The turret has an armored structure with a basic protection level of 2, with the option to install additional armor to increase the level to 4. Furthermore, the system can be equipped with two ROSY launchers (each with 9 multi-spectral smoke grenades) and 1 coaxial machine gun mounted on the left of the main gun for self-defense.
In terms of sensors, the Skyranger 30 is integrated with modern search and tracking sensors, providing seamless 360-degree air and ground surveillance capabilities. This ensures continuous surveillance and engagement capabilities.
The Skyranger 30’s design is highly modular, allowing for the integration of various weapon systems, including short-range air defense missile complexes such as the FIM-92 Stinger or Saab RBS 70. This modularity increases the system’s operational range and flexibility, supporting future upgrades such as the fielding of high-energy laser missiles or vertically launched C-PGM missiles, adapting to changing threats on the battlefield.
