The alliance brings together eight top-tier institutions to develop dedicated artificial intelligence models for mathematics and cross-disciplinary research. The initiative aims to support China's high-level scientific self-reliance strategy by integrating machine intelligence with theoretical mathematics.

Mobilizing One Thousand Mathematicians for Specialized AI Models

The newly formed alliance plans to coordinate 1,000 mathematicians across its participating organizations to build autonomous, specialized AI models for mathematical sciences, according to bjnews.com.cn. Shing-Tung Yau stated that artificial intelligence represents an unprecedented tool that aggregates historical human thought through massive computing power. He characterized the current era as both the most exciting and the most dangerous for scholars, noting that while AI models are rapidly generating advanced work, domestic Chinese models have not yet reached world-leading performance levels compared to U.S. competitors.

UA.news reported that Yau assessed China as currently lagging behind the United States in utilizing AI for front-line scientific research, particularly in mathematics and physics. He observed that while Chinese models handle general consumer tasks effectively, they trail leading American systems in complex research applications. The alliance seeks to close this gap by uniting fragmented research efforts and harnessing exponential growth in AI capabilities through organized teamwork.

Distributing Research across Five Cities and Six Key Tasks

The alliance's first laboratory has been established at the Yau Mathematical Sciences Center and Qiu Chengshuai (Qiu Zhen) College in Beijing.

An academic committee chaired by Yau will direct major decisions and evaluations. The alliance has outlined six primary tasks, which include building AI-assisted math research infrastructure, protecting mathematicians’ original work, driving theoretical innovations for AI explainability, expanding the research paradigm into quantum computing and life sciences, running elite international training camps, and publishing the flagship academic journal Journal of AI-Assisted Mathematics.

Navigating Automated Proofs and Global Academic Friction

The launch of the alliance coincides with intense international debate over automated mathematical research following a mass release of AI-generated preprints. finance.sina.cn reported that OpenAI published over 700 AI-generated mathematics manuscripts and proofs on October 6, covering 17 mathematical branches and addressing hundreds of open problems. While some mathematicians praised the verified proofs as major milestones, others criticized the publication volume and lack of accessible human collaborators to explain the generated methods.

Prominent figures including Fields Medalist Terence Tao raised concerns regarding the sudden influx of unverified or obscure machine output, pointing out that researchers struggle to trace the logic without clear human documentation. OpenAI subsequently retracted three preprints and corrected 14 others after errors were identified. Meanwhile, participating units in the newly formed Chinese alliance have already demonstrated practical applications, such as Tsinghua student teams using AI to falsify the degenerate Arnold conjecture and solving a half-century-old geometry problem regarding strict positive sectional curvature on all 28 smooth homotopy 7-spheres, as detailed by bjnews.com.cn.
