Egyptian Singer Saad al-Saghir Arrested for Possession of Banned Drugs
Egyptian security services have arrested popular singer Saad al-Saghir for possession of banned drugs after returning from the United States.
Al-Saghir was returning from the United States after attending several concerts in several American states. During his search at the airport, drugs, including electronic cigarettes containing marijuana oil, were found, and he was referred to the public prosecution for investigation.
Investigation and Interrogation
During his interrogation, al-Saghir did not deny that he had purchased the substances for consumption, and denied using them in general. He explained that he was not aware that marijuana oil was a narcotic, and that he thought it was like regular cigarette oil.
Al-Saghir maintained that he was not proficient in reading and writing English, so he was not aware that it was forbidden to divulge the seized items found in his possession.
Arrest and Charges
According to a local Egyptian website, singer Saad Al-Saghir was arrested at 11pm yesterday, Monday, as he was completing his customs process on his way out of Cairo airport, and 9 electronic cigarettes containing drugs were found in his bag.
The public prosecution shall send the substances found in his possession to the chemical laboratory for examination and until the result of the analysis of the substances found in his possession in the chemical laboratory, it shall be decided whether he shall be detained and detained or released.
Comparison to Similar Incident
Seizures found in Saad al-Saghir’s possession are equivalent to personal use, and less than those found in the possession of artist Menna Shalabi in 2022. However, according to reports, he was referred for prosecution because they were illegal drugs.
Actress Mena Shalabi suffered a similar incident, as 12 bags of marijuana were found in her bag during a customs inspection on her way back from New York.
Last May, an Egyptian court overturned a verdict against the Egyptian actress that sentenced her to one year in prison with a suspended sentence and fined her 10,000 Egyptian pounds, upholding a court-issued verdict against her in January 2023 by the Cairo Criminal Court for possession of the drug hashish.
