Why Buying Big Clothes When You Gain Weight Can Be Counterproductive
For many of us, gaining weight can be a source of anxiety. One way to cope with this is to buy bigger clothes to accommodate our expanding waistlines. However, this approach can have unintended consequences.
Comedian Jeong Hyeong-don, who has struggled with weight gain, shared his experience. “When I debuted, I weighed 77 kg, but now I’ve gained so much weight that I’m 100 kg. If I gain weight and my clothes don’t fit, I buy clothes in larger sizes.” However, he admitted that this approach ultimately led to neglect of his body.
Jeong Hyeong-don’s experience highlights the importance of acknowledging and addressing weight gain rather than simply buying bigger clothes. When asked about his discomfort while gaining weight, he confessed that he didn’t allow himself to feel discomfort, which ultimately dominated his life.
Experts warn that excessive fasting or dieting can be counterproductive to weight loss. Kang Jae-heon, a professor of family medicine at Kangbuk Sacred Heart Hospital, advises against fasting or excessive dieting, instead recommending a balanced approach to weight loss. “The purpose of weight loss is to reduce body fat and avoid the risk of various adult diseases,” he said.
Professor Kang recommends reducing fat intake, eating smaller meals, and exercising regularly. He also advises increasing physical activity by walking short distances and using public transport whenever possible. “Fasting is only effective in the short term and can have negative effects in the medium and long term,” he warned.
In addition to a balanced diet and regular exercise, Professor Kang emphasizes the importance of monitoring weight gain through clothing. “If you continue to buy loose clothes when you gain weight, you can reduce your distrust or discomfort about weight gain. When your clothes become tight due to weight gain, take it as a sign that you need to lose weight and use it as an opportunity to control your diet and do more exercise.”
By acknowledging and addressing weight gain, rather than simply buying bigger clothes, we can take the first step towards a healthier lifestyle. As Professor Kang advises, “It is difficult for overweight or obese people to lose weight and keep it off. To prevent the yo-yo phenomenon, it is effective to combine physical exercise with a balanced diet.”
