US Defense Secretary Responds to Israel’s Attack on Beirut
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin addressed reporters at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington on Friday, September 27, following his return from London.
Austin revealed that he was not informed in advance about the Israeli operation in Beirut, stating, “We were not warned in advance. I was on the phone with Minister Gallant during the operation. This operation just happened two hours ago. They are evaluating. I don’t have any additional information or clarity for you at this time.”
Austin Calls for Diplomacy Amid Tensions
When questioned about the situation, Austin stated that he would soon speak with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant to receive an update. He emphasized the importance of avoiding an all-out war between Israel and Hezbollah, citing the potential damage to both sides.
Austin has consistently advocated for diplomacy as the most effective means of resolving conflicts. He reiterated this stance on Friday, urging for a peaceful resolution to the issue.
“Big wars should be avoided. Diplomacy is still the best way, and the fastest way to bring home displaced Israeli and Lebanese civilians on both sides of the border,” Austin said.
