Christian Figures Criticize Stephen Curry Over Abortion Stance

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry has been criticized by Christian figures after voicing support for Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on the abortion issue. Curry, a self-proclaimed Christian, expressed his support for Harris during a CNBC interview on September 3.

When asked why he was publicly supporting Harris’s presidential bid and what issues he cared most about, Curry stated, “Obviously supporting Kamala is important to me and my family. And understanding that women should have the right to choose what’s right for them is the most important thing.”

Curry has long supported Democratic presidential candidates, including former President Barack Obama and President Joe Biden, and even endorsed Harris at the Democratic National Convention in August.

Ryan Bomberger, co-founder and chief creative officer of The Radiance Foundation, expressed his disappointment with Curry’s stance, stating, “My biological mother was one of the 1% of women who became pregnant as a result of rape, but she chose to tell the world instead of aborting me. Curry’s position is tragic.”

Bomberger, whose youngest son is a huge Curry fan, lamented on social media that “Curry, a Christian basketball all-star and Olympic champion with over 100 million followers, is taking a stance that disproportionately devastates the black community with violence and despair.”

Bestselling author and radio host Eric Metaxas attributed Curry’s views on abortion to “seeker-friendly churches.” He charges that “some seeker-friendly churches flatter the secular world in an effort to attract attendees and increase membership by not taking a clear position on controversial issues like abortion.”

Benjamin Watson, a Christian father of seven and retired Super Bowl champion, expressed his thoughts on Curry’s stance, stating, “A lot of people were shocked or disappointed that Steph Curry would support abortion as a top voting issue. I’m neither. But he was motivated. If such a weak argument convinced him that ‘life doesn’t matter,’ how much more influenced by the actual truth? We have work to do.”

Curry previously told Rolling Stone magazine in 2022 that he is neither pro-choice nor pro-life. His comments came after the NBA and some basketball players expressed their disdain for the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion, and allowed states to decide how to regulate it.
