India secured an ODI series victory against West Indies, but captain Shubman Gill stated that the team still has key areas to fine-tune before next year’s World Cup, cricinfo.com reported. Gill highlighted specific concerns regarding fielding lapses and execution during death overs.
Why are death overs and fielding causing concern for India?
Gill pointed out that the team lacks clarity when defending totals in the final phase of an innings. I feel sometimes we are not really clear whether we are attacking or we are defending, especially when we are bowling in the death overs,
Gill said at the presentation, as reported by cricinfo.com.
One-day[ers] is such a game, if the opposition is five or six down, you are never really sure what fields to take, whether we are going for the death too early or we are still, you know, bowling kind of like middle overs. I think these are some areas which definitely we need to be better at.

In addition to bowling tactics, Gill expressed dissatisfaction with the squad’s fielding standards. India dropped six or seven catches across the three matches, a statistic the captain described as a poor sign ahead of the global tournament.
How did squad rotation affect the team’s performance?
India played the series without key personnel. Jasprit Bumrah was on Asian Games duty, while Hardik Pandya was recovering from an injury. Coach Gautam Gambhir utilized the matches to test alternative lineup options.
Pace spearhead Mohammed Siraj featured in only one match and did not bowl in the death overs. Instead, debutants Anshul Kamboj and Auqib Nabi, alongside Gurnoor Brar and offspinner Naman Dhir, gained valuable experience bowling in the final ten overs across various fixtures.
What happened in the final match of the series?
On Saturday, India batted first after losing two early wickets for four runs and posted a total of 351. Gill earned Player of the Series honors after accumulating 334 runs, which included an unbeaten double-century during a successful chase of 406 earlier in the tour.
However, India missed out on a strong finish in the final match after being penalized for a slow over rate past the 46th over. The penalty forced the team to place only four fielders on the fence instead of the permitted five for the final deliveries.
I think the game was in control. But you know, being behind four overs with this and then in the last, I think they took the game away from us. Had we, you know, not been short on the overs, I think the game might have gone to the last over.

Gill was dismissed early in the fixture for a low score after edging a delivery from Jayden Seales to West Indies wicketkeeper Shai Hope, who completed a full-stretch, one-handed catch.
What comes next for the squad ahead of the 2027 World Cup?
India faces a limited schedule of One Day Internationals before the 2027 World Cup commences in October. The coaching staff and players must balance winning matches with evaluating bench strength and securing backup options for frontline bowlers who are working their way back into the setup.
